new "star" ratings
Thursday, September 30, 2004 by Tiggz | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
So I decided to go thru all the stars and see what each one translated as:
5 stars=10
4 stars=7
3 stars=5
2 stars=3
1 star=1
it seems, if I use the star sytem to rate, I can either rate something that's pretty-darn-good-but-not-quite-perfect a 10... or a 7.
personally I'd like to keep the marks out of 10 system as it gives a broader choice, but failing that...well, I'm not sure, but the tarif as detailed above seems flawed to me.

I'm really looking forward to all of the galleries being listed that way. I was going through them trying to recall some of my favorites and feeling kind of frustrated. Some of the people don't have a new page and I wanted to give their work reference.
(edited to take out two of the three reallys) ... sheesh!

The way I see it is:
One Star: Poor graphics and difficult to use.
Two Stars: Average graphics, but usable. Good skins, but can be improved upon.
Three Stars: Good graphics, easy to use. Most top quality skins will have this rating.
Four Stars: Excellent graphics, easy to use. The best quality you can get. Major releases only.
Five Stars: Major new release which is unique enough to influence the skinning world. Five stars rarely given.
Of course, that's only my opinion. Each of you will have your own way of determining a rating...

Well, after going and trying out the new star rating system, it's a little clearer what it means that the system we now have because it plainly says it when you mouse over the stars:
1 star: I hate it
2 stars: I don't like it
3 stars: It's ok
4 stars: I like it
5 stars: I love it

Note that the above differs greatly from the current system in that a 1 star or a 5 stars shouldn't be so rare as a 1 or a 10 given now.  Basically now, I've always considered a 1 as "you can't get any worse than this" and a 10 "nothing can top this". While "I hate this skin" or "I love this skin" wouldn't be so rare.

Is the system documented anywhere publically yet?
Just curious to see how the "wieghted" part works.
Thanks

1 star = I just got up and found out I have to go out to get coffee
2 star = I just got up and have to wait for coffee to make
3 star = I just got up and can smell coffee making
4 star = I just got up and had my first few sips of coffee
5 star = YEEEEHAAAA, had a cup of that goooood  strong jave and I'm ready to roll....

When I get a low rating, I would really like to know why...WHAT is it specifically, that I need to work on for my next skin.

My I double post??
And I want to add, that....I won't say the skin name...but anyway, I saw a skis & made a comment ob how great it was...then downloaded and tried it...went back and gave it a high rating...I combined what I thought when I saw it, with the features, with the orgionality, and with what I thought about it from a user's point....functionability...
The rating was high even though, for ME, the functionability was rather low...everything else about it was high...
I then went back and made another comment to explain what made the skin hard for me to use...I think that's the "key" to ratings...learning what needs to be fixed...understanding that you can't please all the people all the time...but a skin shouldn't get a low rating because it blue...or even a high rating because it blue.
The thing is that some people will rate and never comment...OR even worse people will say something like "It's really bad"...ok, nice to know...but WHY is is bad...There was a WB, that's now been deleted...several "It's ugly, or bad...etc..." But very few "WHYS"
If there was a rating system like I suggested...and I'm sure others have too...then a person doesn't necessarily have to comment for the author to know what to work on.

Not exactly my way of browsing for things though, but yes it works.
