A question on skin frames.

Monday, August 23, 2004 by Corky_O | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I am planning to start my first skin and was wondering about the window frame and the taskbar elements.

My question actually has 2 parts:

1) Should I use vector art for the creation of my frames and buttons and bring that art into Photoshop to do lighting and shadows, then save to .bmp and .tga - or just use rastor art and do all in photoshop. My concern would be with the resizing issue, which brings me to part 2 of my question.

2) Am I correct in assuming that the right and left ends of my Titlebar should be individual images and should not be allowed to be resized?

I have read the owner's manual which comes with Object Desktop, and have gleaned my question from that text. I would love to get the advise of some people who have first hand knowledge of the best way to approach.

I tend to want to create some sort to template(s) to refer to and would like my template to be as viable as possible for the first one. My intention is to view other features of skins which I have downloaded (and tried) in Skin Studio to get an idea of bar heights, start menu dimensions, special pane dimensions, etc.

Any helpful hints would be welcome, as well as a push down the correct path if I am totally off the trail.

Thanks again.

You can set the sizing margins of the borders, telling it what to stretch and what not to stretch. Seperate end images arent needed.

If your image uses shadows or, is non rectangular, it is best to use vectors to draw them, and save as tga or png. I prefer png because it is easier to modify them later. Magic pink bmp files can be a pain in the arse for shadows and non rectangular images.

Thanks, CerebroJD and ChasUGC.

I will post in Skinning section with other questions I am sure to have as I go.

I will use Illustrator to draw the vector objects and save as png's.

Thanks a million.
