What the hell is going on with WB skins?

Thursday, June 3, 2004 by Fuzzy Logic | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Is it me or are people suddenly uploading any old crap? I've been through the latest WB uploads to do a proper assessment of each and more than half of them are unfinished or have major errors. And now the latest one has nothing in it - how is any Joe Bloggs downloading that supposed to use it?

Come on people, get your act together. Take a bit more care over what you upload for goodness sake >

Me personaly I would like for people to comment. I look forward to seeing what they are saying. I've uploaded a couple of logons here. Mind you I don't have many comments. My main problem with them are the buttons, But no one comments or gives advice, And as I'm new to WB and Logons comments from Skinners that have been at this a while Would be helpful. I know that my WB and logons are not 10"s yet but I'm working on it. SO Proskinners comments, WE newbies need your imput or at least Comment on Mine !!!

That just the "multi-post" bug strikeing again (check the time of the posts)

It is difficult to comment on someones work. Unless it is actual errors in the skin, what is good to some is terrible to others. I could make comments on your logons but someone would surely come along and flame me and disagree. So, its not worth the anguish. It's basically up to the artists personal style.

If I only had a quarter for all the lousy comments I got on those ports I did...

No errors that are apparent

Essencay, I think you need to clarify what you mean by apparent. I guess you mean visually apparent. But, I have yet to see a skin that has attempted to fix any of the errors identified in skin studio. I go through all my skins and do so. Even a great skin such as Christmas Time has over 70 errors identified by Skin Studio. So, I really don't think it has anything to do with bride of work.

As for other skins where artists aren't as accomplished as a Christmas Time quality skin, I think it is just uploaded for an ego boost and ten minutes of fame. I've seen artists brag that they made five skins in two hours time. Heck, I could make fifty skins in two hours, but they would look like crap too. So, at this point, I agree that it has to do with bride of work.

My next skin is coming along nicely. I could even submit it now. But, bride of work will force me to wait about two more months.

dunno if it is pride or what, but some just have a hard time with rejection...

Not the "sorry but this is unacceptable for this site" kind of rejection but the fear of not being good enough or something...

with me not submitting is more in the direction of not wanting to go pee in the pool kinda thing

Completely off topic but I'm reminded of a joke:

There is a difference between peeing in the pool and peeing into the pool..... I found out the hard way.....

No errors that are apparent without user(fixed spelling error) ripping it open in SkinStudio and going over every detail with a fine-toothed comb.

Pretty much means what it says ....those great skins like Christmas Time that have, like you said, 70+ errors aren't readily apparent using the skin, doesn't make them any less great, but those non-critical errors should be cleaned up to improve performance, because the skin is asking WB to apply attributes that don't exist.

they used to use a dye in the public pools here which turned bright orange when interacting with urine. But people got ticked and said it was not PC so they stopped.

Personally it only took one visit after they started using it for me, and then I refused to get in thte water...

mmmm, that could be applied to submitting skins also I assume

I share the same feeling...Part of the reason it takes me months to finish a WB.

Skinning for me isnt just about having fun, but also about making something that other people will like and use...If they dont, then it wasnt worth my time...Which is precious.

Then again, some people measure 'what's good enough' internally, and not according to what others think.

Which can be a higher goal to achieve.

I don't really make them for anyone. To me it is a challenge to see if I can make this thing in my head come out and look like something special. Sure, its nice when others like it and use it. But, I'm still pretty much disappointed with most of my work. It is due to my lack of graphic skills. Honesty hurts sometimes but maybe with a little more time and effort it will improve by my next skin. I have ideas, and if I can make them work, it should be an improvement. Heck, I've done updates on all my skins, but I haven't had time to upload them.

I think therfore ass I am. Just be thankful Old Crab doesn't send anything up the pipe. Everyone would be back at the good old C:> prompt again and have to actually think about computing and what to do next. >
