Spamming and Flaming

Why? Why are so many people against the idea of others posting links to their own skinning sites in forums or message boards?
Consider this… If you believed you were a part of a community and you thought that you had something to contribute (for free)… not software or freeware... and you thought you were doing your part to help this community grow, how would you feel if your attempts at becoming a valuable piece of this puzzle were shot down by your own people? Why can’t other skinning sites and forums play “Big Brother” to others? Why try to stomp out little brothers who would just like to grow with the idea of skinning?
SPAM… how could someone trying to list their part of the community, in the community forums be considered spamming?
Advertising… How could a site that isn’t selling anything or promoting anything be considered as advertising something?
Self Promotion… How could someone that has nothing more than a forum for people of the community to share thoughts be considered self-promotion… when the only real thing that is being promoted is the skinning community itself?
This community will NOT continue to grow instead it will be controlled by only a few major companies (just like everything else) until something changes…
Go ahead and start bashing me for this post… I am prepared.

I'm not going to be bashing. I will just tell you how it is on our forum, which is quite different than this one. But still, its a forum. We don't allow promotions on our board period. If we allowed for one member we would have to allow for several thousand others and just letting one in has generated several more in a day. We have, however, provided a place where people can place a link.
Even though there are times we have wanted to be more lenient, we have found it to be a mistake to be so. People seeing the promotion were quick to jump in, people even joined just to promote. The new people couldn't possibly know the standing of the member with the first link. They just saw a promotion and didn't think it was fair that they couldn't post theirs.
But it is easier for us, because we can just direct them to the board that we have established for just that purpose.
Almost every forum I have been on has the same standard.

I think it would be a nice addition to have a place where people could put links to their sites. Maybe like an addition to the Community links or something. That way, people always know where to look. there is no worry about the message board getting swamped and links are always accessible. I know at our forum it is always interesting to look through the various sites that our members have made.

It's those kind of attitudes that need to be checked. Maybe we should strive to bring forth a new community. Before it's to late.

I'm with snowman on this one, was a lot better a year/ 2 years ago when I came here.
The group WC adicteds have disapeared, just to call a few, schmoopy, jammeister33, elvee, elfkura, adni and ofcourse Green Armani... things just aren't the same anymore but lets just try to make the best of it...

How many forums can 1 person play around in? Ws Taylor, I really hope your site grows. Its a little busy to navigate around but just like any other you just have to get used to it.

Most sites are sees upon themselves as communities, which is kinda ok I guess, but that is not The Community
The Community is (or rather was) the.... hmm dunno how to put it to words really.... partnership(?!?!) between sites, in the old days before DA and WC got to be the leading places for people to "hang out".
Quite franktly I enjoy more roaming around on the smaller sites, but I visit all sites as often as possible, at least once a day. If only "everyone" would do that I guess the 'beeing-together-spirit' might be easier to revive.
Am I talking out of my ass here or does it at least sound a bit possible?!

WStaylor: IMO there's nothing wrong with "self-promotion" on other sites as long as its not getting annoying.

1. I see nothing wrong with putting a link on the MSGBD to your site.
2. I think selfpromoting like putting links to your work on the MSGBD should be a no-no.
Like heres a link to my new wall,WB or what ever.
Snowman, people tend to camp out where they feel wanted,needed liked or comfortable.

A lot of the smaller sites make you feel unwelcome. Like you're invading their personal space or something. There's a little of that at WC but on the whole it's too big to be a clique. People have their own group of friends etc, but that's not a bad thing.
Go over to Skinbase and see how welcome you are...gave that place up pronto - talk about private clubs...!

Fuzzy: everyone is welcomed at Skinbase.
In the 4 years Ive been admin there I cant remember anyone "scareing" no one away.....
We might have "kicked out" a few troublemakers, but I guess thats about it.
But my email is always open if you wanna elaborate it.

Fuzzy....you're wrong there.....for several years I'd religiously hop from site to site daily.....keeping up to speed with everything I could....from Custo to LOS to Base to Deskmod to Devart to Skinz to LS net to Floach to here.....[and others]....got awfully complicated....but as my role here at WC got more 'involving' I found I had less opportunity to channel-surf......but that's perhaps understandable.
People who ARE skinning, etc SHOULD be distributing their works to other sites....and keeping track of the global community....and not get too insular....it's not good for your own development or that of the 'community'...

If you feel your web site has something to contribute to the community, post it as a news item then let the admins decide if it's news worthy or not.
We can't allow people to start posting threads about their own web site or we'll soon be floaded with these messages. On the other hand, there was one specific thread that served that very purpose. If it's limited to one single thread, then it's ok. Lemme dig it out for you and make it a sticky thread.

There you go. Post your link in the "user Websites" thread please. Or if you feel that your site has something great and new to offer, try to submit a news item about it. Note that when submitting a news item, don't just give the link to your site, please do the effort of writting something about it, write a news story and give the link.

After all, WC was small at one time as well...
But the attitudes of some have surprised me.
