People On This Site...

Thursday, April 15, 2004 by connor_roberts | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

It has become apparent to me that I cannot post something on this site hoping for a real conversation...it seems that only people exist on here are the ones who want to insult someone, immature people, and/or kids. I thought this site had a higher standard, I appologize for expecting more out of its users. I am going back to programming, another programmer this site just lost because of it's inflexibility. I never once cussed, or made fun of anyone...I had a very decent opinion and conversation and then my original thread got locked...where are the open minds these days?

winCustomize.com, — Users of wincustomize.com, were attacked by a man wielding a blunt object after a posting this afternoon. The users were all hit on the outside of their right knee by the assailant, who then escaped from the messageboard as the users fell to the ground, though he returned.

The suspect, described by a witness as a 6-foot-2 white male, has not been caught, and the users status for making remarks to his post was very much in doubt.

"I just don't want to lose faith in people," Jafo told the users tonight. "... It was one bad guy and I'm sure there's others because this kind of thing has happened before in other posts. ... Most people are worried about us, wondering what happened. Those are the people that I want to tell we are okay. It's not the most important thing — customizing — so if we can't do it, We'll have to deal with it. It could have been a lot worse."

#81 is a new classic response for those who keep threatening (or is it more like "promising?") to leave but somehow never do. Way to go, Webgizmos!

I don't know what the guy is talking about programming-wise. I really have no concern either way.

As for the eventuality of this particular thread, I think that this kind of thing has become obscenely pointless. This is now a community of opinion, or location, not interest. I simply can't get into it any more... the "spirit" isn't there. Conversations, even about skinning, are like excuses to vent. So many times I have started to post and then decided against it, simply because the act risks more sparring.

As this pertains to " those who keep threatening ... to leave but somehow never do", I am one of them. I come back because I liked skinning. Trying to get into the spirit of the GUIO has shown me how little it really appeals to me now. There's an idiotic amount of unrelated baggage for me. I wander back in and try to attune myself to the point and find that without the fencing there isn’t much here. Without a ‘skinning’ community to share with I have no reason to skin.

I had really hoped that JoeUser would be a good release for all this goofiness, but it seemed just to solidify those who remained. Similarly, I went to Stardock chat once. I unwittingly replied to something TechCat asked shortly after some silliness here... and was told that Stardock chat was not for chat, that by talking i was "spamming", and that I should shut up, all with a generous amount of belligerence and obscenity. I didn’t feel welcome, and I haven't been back.

Trolls in fairy tales didn't generally wander in, they waited under their bridge for an unwary traveler. These threads could be removed and the idiots reduced to visitor status, quietly. Instead, many just lay-in-wait, and engage, so naturally that the responses seem scripted. Trolls can be trolls even when they are right. From the skinz messageboard on, I think such has just degraded and splintered what might have been a focused, productive community of people who share an interest in skinning.

Sorry. I just wanted to say that these altercations don't end the way you think. The silent bystanders are often just as disgusted with the defenders and they are with the invaders. After a while it poisons the true focus. If I were Brad, I would really have to think about how “community” aspects are managed, and, frankly, who is managing them. Little is done to preserve the quality of “community” as it pertains to skinning. I have seen too many people baited, turned off, and cast-out lately for reasons completely unrelated to skinning to think it is done well.

hmm, BakerStreet killed it
threads like this one tend to be the most popular usually ... what pretty much proves his point

"Without a ‘skinning’ community to share with I have no reason to skin."

that´s sad for you. i skin, because when i have an idea then i try to get it on my desktop. another fun part is trying out new things that have not been done before. i could not care less about ratings and download counts. comments are something i don´t bother much either (i have to admit that i am of course flattered if somebody like Maur likes my cursors). your motives seem to be different, but i think the one who sufferes most are you yourself.
i for example have no clue what i miss (if anything ) and therefore can´t care much.
