The GUI Olympics: One month...

Friday, April 2, 2004 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I'm not speaking for Stardock. I'm speaking for myself.  I'm pretty disappointed with the GUI Olympics so far.

Not so much the entires. There are some outstanding entries so far.  But the quantity so far has been lacking. Not in terms of # of skins per skinner but the number of skinners.

Winamp: 11 skins. Most of which are classic.

IconPackager: 7 icon packages.

WindowBlinds: 45

The people participating are doing some great work. But I'm becoming a bit concerned about the number of skinners participating. Are there a lot of entries still in development? I hope so. Because I got all kinds of emails from people asking for another GUI Olympics. I didn't want to do one. It's a lot of extra work for me and Pat. But we went ahead and did it and managed to get a bunch of big name sponsors this time.

What I'd like to know is how many of you reading this have submissions that are pending still.  Because if we end up with the contest only having say 15 to 20 people total participating, then I'd say it was not worth it. Where are all the other skinners. Where are the Winamp skinners? Where are the WB skinners? Where are the Icon authors? Are they still working on stuff or is there just not that much interest in contests like these?

John and I are working on some WB skins...... I was so glad you extended the deadline an extra month, because I felt rushed before. We wanted to do an IconPack too, but there's just not enough time, we'd be rushing things again to attempt it.

the iconists are at Pixelpalooza. probably a little unfortunate that both contests are in the same time of the year.
you can also see that there are far more entries in the "anything goes" category than in the Candybar category. Candybar is somehow an equivalent to IconPackager but has a lot less icons to skin. and still there aren´t to many people doing them.

Just as Koasati said, really pleased contest extended for another month as I was originally only going to submit 2 entries, I will have 4 by end of the month.

Quite surprised at Winamp side though, so many outstanding winamp skinners out there and there ain't many entered...

Personally I'm hoping to contribute at least one more WB skin which will have more appeal than my current entry...but I'm also surprised at how few people are seeming to be involved. I've been most surprised to see new WB skins appearing here at WC at this time from different authors rather than them giving it a go in the Olympics.

Is it the pre-moderation that's putting people off, or is it that some of the first submissions so early looked so slick and polished that it's put people off?

Since I never expected to win anything, I have no fear in putting forward a submission and risking rejection...but maybe that's enough to put some people off even trying?

Almost done with my Winamp 5 modern skin entry. First one I've done so it's kind of slow going, learning as I go.

My entries are taking a little longer because I got sick and got behind in my work.

But I still think I will finish in time.

Not sure about the WinAmp skinners though, I think that will shoot up at the last minute. I almost can't imagine some WinAmp authors passing this one up.

Windowblinds will probably get the most because it is the easiest to skin (as far as I am concerned). Icon packs take time and WinAmp can be a little confusing for newbies...

long story short is I am entering... planning 4 Windowblinds, one WinAmp and 2 icon packs... probably actually finish 2 Windowblinds

Intimidation is my excuse...

There's literally hundreds of fantastic and creative skinners out there, but there's *also* Some of the "big daddies" I call 'em who are so beyond the average skinner that no one can really compete: so why try? [That's just *my* defeatest attitude hehe... ]

Why, for example, if I were a WB skinner, would I even TRY to go up against the likes of TSF, BoXXi, and other "big daddies"? What would *my* chances be? lol... If the skin was good enuff [doubtful] I suspect people would still favor the bigger names.

I realize there's a lot of loopholes in what I'm saying in that I'm mainly speaking for myself..NOT anyone else.

In short, I suppose me [or another skinner] entering the Olympics and going up against the best of the best would be like me trying to create a better game on my own than EA Games creates, see what I mean? There'd just be no hope. Even if I made a decent proverbial "game", it would STILL be no match for the big names with big teams- so the "little people" become left out, or at least FEEL left out.

I admire those who DID submit their work: they all look amazing and far beyond my capabilities.

Keep in mind, I'm just speaking as to why I personally didn't submit anything.

bahhh

So what they are big names

piffftt

I am a up and coming skinner!!! I'll show them!

Plus, can't hurt if you try.

Maybe next GUIO will have more participation and more notice as well. A months notice and 2 months playing the games!

Can't wait until 4 years from now for the next one!!!!

Wait I minute, I resign my post #11, because I agree with post #9, so I won't submit my skin. Its useless against the great skinners like Boxxi, and according to the Mr. Spyder, there is favoritism anyway. So, I won't be posting my skin at the Olympics. Its useless.

On second thought, or third thought, its just for the fun of it, right? Who cares whether you win or lose. So, I'll be posting my skin at the Olympics. Even though I have no chance of winning according to Spyder.

Besides I have noticed some newbies take on the GUIO. I would love to see what you guys would come up with. Mine are sort off 'out there' so I don't think they will win, but it will be seen and discussed.

Maybe I'll start a revolution??? the next generation of skinning?

Hey Joe, you said "out there"? Wait until they get a load of my crazy skin. It's a cross between Fushia and Pink.

Well I'm kind of a newbie in skinning, so each time I sit down and do something I learn a little more, luckily I'm a fast learner. I won't be entering with a hardcore creative design (I think the next one will - found my inspiration...), but instead a nice looking skin that's very easy to use on a regular basis. Actually my WB skin is done, but I'll hold it until my IP is ready. That is truly not something that's done in a week. I tend to think a lot of people are holding theirs back too, polishing it up, editing it, redesigning - and why not? You extended the deadline 6 weeks, 6 weeks! So I really don't think you should bring this up at this time. If the entries or amount of skinners that have submittet something to the GUIO still is low say a week before deadline, then it's justified. For me it's just too early to tell. I think there's a big interest in a contest like this, the winners will get their names all over the internet - a spark for new jobs and challenges. Lift you head up high Brad, they'll come

I am being very busy with my work (2 jobs at the moment) but I am skinning till late hours everyday. brad, as i told you before, skinning today is very time consuming, I spent over 260 hours just in 2 icon packs and almost 100 hours in my wb skin. Can you imagine how difficult is to find some many spair hours in just a few amount of time?

Well, I am not finished yet....more will come GO! GO!
