The GUI Olympics: One month...

Friday, April 2, 2004 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I'm not speaking for Stardock. I'm speaking for myself.  I'm pretty disappointed with the GUI Olympics so far.

Not so much the entires. There are some outstanding entries so far.  But the quantity so far has been lacking. Not in terms of # of skins per skinner but the number of skinners.

Winamp: 11 skins. Most of which are classic.

IconPackager: 7 icon packages.

WindowBlinds: 45

The people participating are doing some great work. But I'm becoming a bit concerned about the number of skinners participating. Are there a lot of entries still in development? I hope so. Because I got all kinds of emails from people asking for another GUI Olympics. I didn't want to do one. It's a lot of extra work for me and Pat. But we went ahead and did it and managed to get a bunch of big name sponsors this time.

What I'd like to know is how many of you reading this have submissions that are pending still.  Because if we end up with the contest only having say 15 to 20 people total participating, then I'd say it was not worth it. Where are all the other skinners. Where are the Winamp skinners? Where are the WB skinners? Where are the Icon authors? Are they still working on stuff or is there just not that much interest in contests like these?

I have one skin based off of the 4 train of the New York Subway train system with a 'experimental' sub skin XP panel.

I looked forward to seeing something different and unusual this year...

I got 4 skins accepted so far.
I have one skin I am correcting that was denied!
I have one skin in moderation that should get accepted unless it needs some reapiring also.
I have had 3 skins rejected. These I uploaded here at WC.

I know my skins are nothing special when you compare them to the other stuff at GUIO, or alot others here at WC, but what the hey. I am a beginner skinner and to have 4 skins up and 2 more in the whole makes me feel pretty good. Someday I will make a skin that will carry a strong 10 rating but that comes with time and experience. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all you kind people around here that have helped me out.

I just wanted to thank everyone involved in having the GUIO. What have I got to lose anywyas, a couple of months of not be able to upload them anywhere else is about all I got to lose. Thanks again for your time!

Whatever digitaltrucker is creating looks like something from another dimension. I really hope he /you intend to enter that one!

I was actually looking forward to participate in this year's GUIO. I received many emails from people asking/encouraging me to enter. Unfortunately my girlfriend got ill a little over a month ago and remains in the hospital, so between her and my job I am left with virtually no time to participate. The few skins that I've uploaded have been for the most part unfinished projects that I've completed.
I surely hope things pick up on the 2004 GUIO as I'm looking forward to enter next year. It will be a shame that Brad would put a halt on next year's event due to lack of participants this year

Well, I'm tired of holding unto this thing. I'm uploading mine now. Hope you all like it. It's a tribute to the Rock Band Aerosmith. It's based on the Album "Just Push Play" Here goes...(nothing?)

If any new skinners need someone to test their WB skin for 'technical' errors....SkinStudio can be overwhelming....my addy's in my profile and I am more than willing to spend the time with your skin to find them. My 'artistic' skill is weak, but I'm a fanatic for details

I was really hoping to do at least a couple skins for this one but I've been really hammered for time. I'm working at a new job (in their office ) and also working on theirs and other projects at night. It's been a real struggle trying to make a living since the outsourcing craze has ped my pay to a third what it used to be. There are not enough hours in the day and I need to do three times as much work for the same money as before...

I started a WB skin and I will try to get at least that one skin done (so my teammates don't hate me ).

I have 3 WB entries under construction and I too was grateful it was extended one month. I only expect one will be received as "unique". Anyway, I would expect the quantity of submissions will increase dramatically as the end draws near, patience grasshopper

I am hoping to have time to get another skin done. But like most others time is a big factor. I feel that enough time was given for the contest but it just takes so long to work out a skin.

I think people are just waiting in the wings.
If you'll notice, there are at least 30 teams with (0) zeros still. If each team has atleast 2 people in it, thats 60 skins.
That's not counting the people who will contribute that aren't part of a team.
Then, there are the people who will wait till the last minute.
So, I don't see a problem.

If I'm wrong, I wouldn't expect another GUIO's.

I expect another GUIO... sooner or later.
I don't think that is a problem.

I do wonder how this one will turn out. One more month to go.

I think the WinAmp users will come in at the last minute. Windowblinds will have almost 200 entries (with hopefully more participants ratio) and the icons... well that will be on the low end I am sure.

I am not even finished with this year and I am already thinking about next year.

WindowBlinds
WinAmp
Icon Packs
Logons
WinStep
LiteStep

and Best over all suite!!!! (10 skinned programs or more)

Suggestion for those who are skinning crazy stuff:

Try to have a sub style that is less crazy or experimental. I think one perfect example of that is Mindless Puppet's Organics 3. The sub style is the crazy one while the main style is just a little less crazy.

I seriously hate being the one to say this all the time, but it illustrates a point perfectly. When I won the last GUIOs I was an almost complete unknown. I beat all those 'big name' skinners people seem so worried about, and in a contest which arguably had a lot more politics going on behind the scenes than the current one.

Don't decide not to enter just because well-known skinners have already done so. Just try your hardest and enter whatever you come up with. Nobody was more surprised than me when I won last time, and you might just be surprised too.

As for whether I'll be entering this year, I doubt it now. After certain derogatory remarks were made about my work ethic, and the fact that I have other 'real life' things keeping me busy, I simply don't have the will or the time to get something together in time. I feel I already made my mark last time, and it's the turn of another unknown to do likewise this time.

Doesn't matter who submits works....they are ALL checked with the assumption they may be screwy and/or buggy.

No-one plays favourites...and fame and/or popularity means diddly-squat.....I can hate everyone equally...
