IMPORTANT: A Call To All Citizens, Apprentices, Scribes, Journeymen, and Admins:

Thursday, March 25, 2004 by macrobaye | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

THERE'S AN EPIDEMIC ON OUR HANDS!

Now before you go on thinking what I know you all are thinking, this isn't a rant about ratings or rejections. I'm calling all of you to go on a mission. I've noticed that there are a tremendous amount of skins that are accepted to this site that receive only 1 rating, which is the rating of the Admin, usually the default 6. THIS IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING! Even to me! Now most of my skins have been rated multiple times, so this isn't about me,

THIS IS ABOUT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY

WinCustomize is a thriving community, and as the most recent poll points out, this community is becoming more and more popular every day. This means there are new members, downloads, and skinners every single day. With this comes great responsibility on our parts. When a new member decides to upload something, he wants feedback, even if it's not as favorable as he/she had hoped. When they see the default rating appear upon it's uploading, and when they see that rating remain unchanged, there is a feeling of isolation... especially when the more well known users in this community end up with 15 or so ratings.

THE NEW WILL CARRY THE MESSAGE OF THE OLD

How can we survive if we do not show a sign of hospitality to the new members? We need to show as much consideration as possible. More ratings, both good and bad, are BETTER than fewer ratings, because it shows not only that we care about the new members' efforts, but also that there is much room and appreciation for improvement.

DON'T WORRY, CITIZENS, YOU CAN DO YOUR PART TOO!

Nothing says thank you like leaving a comment. I've noticed that there is a horribly large number of new submissions that go seemingly unnoticed, despite what may be a good number of downloads. If you like what you see, SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION! If you don't, tell them how they can improve! Because when members, both new and old, upload something that receives no comments, they either feel neglected, or they feel like everything is ok (when, and I shutter to think, things, i.e. the work, may not be).

With over 1,000,000 members and tens of thousands of skins available, the future looks bright for WC. But don't let things just roll along. You can feed this fire everyday...

SO I CALL OUT TO ALL CITIZENS, APPRENTICES, JOURNEYMEN, SCRIBES, AND ADMINS:

DO YOUR PART! RATE, COMMENT, AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! SHOW WHY THIS IS THE BEST COMMUNITY ON THE INTERNET...PERIOD.

There are Citizen level4, Apprentice, Master Apprentice, Journeyman and Masters. The Mod's and Admins generally rate upon submission.

If you don't download and try a blind, boot skin and so forth, don't rate it. How can you rate a blind by the preview? You don't know if it works or how it will look on your machine. But yes, the more that participate the better things will be.

I think this post should be sticky... I really wish more people would comment on my uploads... and as far as ratings go, I don't want to say anything. I really love this site and I always want to feel like I am a member, but sometimes I feel looked down upon. I'll continue to submit and continue to comment, but just have a look at my latest wall Thanks macrobaye for showing compassion where others won't... Stick this thread to the top.

one more thing... I think the comments and ratings are more important to most skinners than the actual amount of downloads... If not, then I speak for myself.

Wow I didn't realize it was that important. I'll go through and rate the stuff I've downloaded.
I'm almost afraid to say what I think could be improved though, sometimes. A few times when I have the skinner has freaked, and reminded me that I don't skin so I can't possibly know what I'm talking about. Well no, I don't have anything here, but I've edited some w/ SkinStudio. *shrug* Meh.

cc: if it's done politely and constructively, any comment should be welcomed.  But comment constructively. For example, saying "I don't like dark skins" isn't very helpfull, as obviously everybody has his own tastes in colors. But saying for example "the dark text on the dark background is difficult to read, more contrast would be appreciated" offers more to the skinner to improve upon.

I agree, this should be viewable as long as possible.

I usually vote on skins, screenshots and wallpapers. I might even visit the graphics section and take a look at some of the uploads there.

Also, while I would agree with WOM about actually downloading skins and seeing if you like it is a good idea, I don't always rate like that.

Personally, there are skins that I do not want on my computer BUT I like what they did with it and the originality. A perfect example is XBOX Live Club.
https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=1&SkinID=3984

For me, its not something I personally like, BUT I think it was done well and is original. I do give props to someone who does something different.

F2003-GA
https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=1&SkinID=4007

Rated it for originality even thought I thought the image quality was medium to low.

If I think my rating is in need of explanation (and that happens half the time), I speak to it.

For F2003, I actually felt I needed to download it. )that reminds me, I forgot to rate it) and I gave it a 7 BECAUSE of its originality and work PLUS... I'll say it again.... PLUS IT GIVES A PERSON SOMETHING TO WORK WITH AND RECONFIGURE. In other words I might not like it too much, but now I have something... sort of a starter kit, for a personal remix.

How Many People actually take a skin that is average to THEM and download it anyway so they can fix it?

Some of what Frogboy posted as cool skins without the shell styles and other now skinnable pieces of Windows OS. Will people download it and update them for themselves??? Will people rate a skin Treetog made called Plava as poor because its not updated with the latest features?

https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=1&SkinID=1877

????

How would you rate this skin?

If you have a personal rating system (like I do) then use it. If someone asks you why you rated or left a message like you did (hopefully it was a constructive message) then you actually have something to say back. At the very least they can respect you for having a system.

Also, the ratings are not as important as comments. Give a comment a day or try to comment on stuff you download. At least half. even if its a "Nice skin" do it. I know I like to have comments.

Ditto to the entire thread, specially the part about more comments. Good or bad, they are always helpful in future projects and improvement of recent ones. As Paxx said, be constructive not destructive.
Thank you Macrobaye for the well put post.

c242 you are exactly the closed minded type of person that makes this site such a contradictive place... I made that wall for Neo because Nikos has been such a nice and supportive person to me... Look closely, that wall has more than just one layer of gradiants and a windows logo... Yes, I make windows wallpapers (thats my thing)... I was only trying to point out the fact: YOU DIDNT COMMENT ON IT OR RATE IT. did you? Why didn't you just comment on it and tell me you think it is worthless rather than getting all angry at me in this thread... exactly the reason a lot of people dont want to say anything around here... btw, I do get it. You dont like me or any of my work... but this thread isnt about me... its about people not COMMENTING on peoples work. Self promotion - I don't think so. I know I have walls that are played out, but rarely do I get a constructive comment... Sorry for the rant and making a mess out of this post Macrobaye...

c242 and wstaylor:

I CANNOT stress this enough:

Please please please please please please DO NOT turn this thread into a flame war. If you want this thread to be sticky, and I think we all do, then please keep the comments to a murmur, rather than a roar.

By the way, wstaylor, I did what I could for the Lonhorn wallpaper, but even giving it an 8 (which I did) only raised it up to a 5.
