How private is your information?

Monday, March 15, 2004 by Rocky Nimda | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I put this here to prove a point. If this little sign can show you you’re IP and other information, then your information isn't as private as you might think.

Sure, I can't see the information about you it just shows me my own information. But every website you visit can, and most do, store this information in log files. This type of information is used for trending data. Web developers use it to get statistical information, so that they can better know what platforms to develop for. There are lots of other types of information that is obtainable also. Your screen resolution would be another type of information that is valuable to developers.

Jafo, or other admins, if you think that this is an inappropriate post, just Delete it. I feel that it is not, but I don't want to overstep my bounds.

Edited due to the fact that I forgot about the Delete thing.

Snowman, I couldn't agree more with you. That is why I posted it. I know that there are several that think this information is private though. I just wanted to make a point that it isn't.

Ugoin↓, Just look at the URL. It will let you know how it's done.

hmm considering my ip changes about every 3 hours or if I unplug my network cord/turn off my computer/ restart my connection I am not overly worried about it.

well reestablishing a new connection with my server is as simple as switching the connection to the loopback then switching back to my ethernetcard. I don't have another computer to go and sit at..................................

this data is collected and used by web sites and designers to have an basis for building more customized sites. it's no big deal almost every pc out there transmits this data every time you connect to a web page ..its enough for ad makers and site sales man to show to the prespective customors that "this adress, useing this OS, while useing this browser version , has vistied this site.

any body Paranoid enough to think this little bit of data "can and will get you hunted down and stalked or worse", needs serious psycholgical attention...or needs to seriously re think their treatment of others they meet on the net ..its really sad if someone has been so abuseive to others on the net that they fear bodily harm...........

*technologically challenged individual at use*

Isn't your IP addy always being transmitted? Even behind a firewall its still transmitted right?

If someone really wants to get you they are gonna do it. Provided they have the skills to do so.
I have found that if you avoid the gaming sites (cheat codes, game reviews, etc), and the porn you may avoid trouble. I never open email from anyone I don't know. It baffles me that people do.

I have had my identity stolen so I know what can happen. I just can't spend all the time fighting the spybots and spam. Id rather be posting stupid comments on message boards.

what people fail to realise is that that image is ONLY shown to YOU. no one else.

it's like having a hyperlink on a website directed to c:\

only you will actually see that outcome. people are too paranoid for their own good. those people should not be allowed ot touch a computer.

I still believe that you should take a test before you buy a computer so we don't get any more stupid users than what we already have.

test before you buy a computer

no, just a test every time you go onto the internet that way you dont end up with message boards full of grammas asking why when they press shut down, it pops up three more choices? (shut down, standby, restart)
