All of the patches MSN offers... I get used to them. So now there is a new warning... ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4233357/ ).
So is it that bad, in your opinion?
I feel so saturated with critical patches... do you think it will ever stop?

I know they are important, but it seems like I just keep losing little bit by little bit the things I used to like about the net.
Like the chicken little story, I start wondering is it really important? Then they come sounding more and more urgent and I get blasé. So sometimes I wonder (or maybe it is more of a wish) that they were only sounding like that because i got that way and they are trying to startle me and it isn't that important after all....
...sometimes it just doesn't pay to think.

I just installed the critical updates that had piled up for awhile. Now I can't access any of the CDDB sites anymore. That just sucks. Why does there always have to be something like that happen?? Anyone know how to fix that?

reinstall the app that accesses cddb. I think that should fix it.

Interestingly, it won't be /vital/ to install this patch if just about everyone else in the world does...like with vaccination, if everyone else is not going to get infected by whatever little beastie comes along in a few days to exploit this hole then it decreases the chances that an unpatched machine will get infected
That said, the speed with which people reverse engineer what hole has been patched by an update is such now that I'd rather risk applying a patch as soon as MS release it than leave a machine vulnerable for even 24 hours.
Also, I'm not sure everyone is aware, but as an example, the hole that Nimda exploited had been being used by hackers for a couple of weeks to get into all sorts of systems before someone kyboshed them by releasing a worm that alerted everyone to the problem. The exploit code that CodeRed used had been in the public domain for months before someone turned it into a worm.
With this latest patch, MS were informed of the hole months ago, so chances are that there are a lot of people out there who have already got tools to get into any machine they like (despite the supposed secrecy)...so, yes, I think this lot of patches is important. Others may be less so, but anything which allows a remote attacker to compromise a large range of Windows versions without involving user interaction ought to be patched asap.
Imagine that 4 lane highway with a load of people lurking in the bushes with keys to your car waiting for you to stop for a picnic...er...anyone know where I'm going with this analogy?

Well I got an error with the SP4..."MSXML 3.0 is NOT installed on the machine"
So I installed SP2 and SP3 in order, which were both successful and then SP4 again witht the same error. Still can't get the Jewel Case program to access CDDB. Microsoft can still do it. Winamp's lookup hasn't been working since the newest 5.x update. Oh well. No great loss so far

Of course I download patches for my Linux box too. And patch HP/UX boxes at work. Just a little more conservative about patching mission critical servers at work though. We really review the patches first, and never install a brand new one. Sometimes patches can fix one thing and break several others.
