My computer is really hanging............

Sunday, February 1, 2004 by dabe | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

..... and it's virtually unusable for some things. Like Photoshop. It took almost 4 minutes for PS to just load, never mind use anything. That's unacceptable, and I'm wondering what's causing it. My CPU load hovers around 20%, when normally it runs about 4-10% if I'm just idling.

I went into Task Manager looking for anything that may be the culprit. In the past, I had two versions of ObjectDock running. No good. But such isn't the case now. What I do have, however, is five copies of svchost.exe. I have no idea what that is, so I'm afraid to start shutting some down. Anyone know? I uploaded a shot of my desktop with taskmanager open, in the hopes that one of you can take a look at it, and maybe advise me about what may be hanging up my computer. Just click on my name to view it.

TIA I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

Oh I dunno, for everyone that has problems with Symantec , there are just as many who do not, more in fact.

The thing you need to do is find the tools that work correctly for you on your specific system and stick with them.

I have yet to be hit with a Virus, Worm, Trojan or anything else with NIS Pro installed since the product hit the market and am running NIS Pro 2004 at this moment on every desktop and laptop on our network and on our client networks. The only time there was any issue in the past was the fault of IT tech's not doing their job and staying on top of updates and pushing them out to the client systems on their local systems.

...Just saw your question in #40...the name is Miles Enterprises...use to be different when it was just a high end PC and Network computer maker, but since my son took over it's gone in 15 different directions. About now, I don't care what he calls it...just so I get my cut

I think the problem is you have your computer on. turn it off and you should notice a remarkable less amount of cpu and memory usage.

Travis, you are sooooooo helpful.

Chas, I do not have double firewall/AV going. Of that I'm sure. I'm running NAV, not Norton Utilities. ZoneAlarm had been a problem for me in the past, but yrag helped me through it. I now have ZAP 4.0 installed, and it's working flawlessly. Hey yrag!!! Is it safe to upgrade to 4.5 yet?

I still haven't run Photoshop yet, and that will be the real test. It's just that it got to be too late last night, and now I gotta get ready for work. > This evening, I'll try to make sure it's all running smoothly.

And yes, I'm fairly sure the problem was/is OD. I tend to have my computer on constantly on weekends, so maybe the GDI's just keep climbing. I don't understand why turning the computer off the first 16 times didn't resolve the problem, though. I like OD. I don't want to have to dump it. I'll just monitor with TaskInfo. Right now, it's running at 80 GDI objects.

Thanks again, everyone. Especially Travis.

Chas....Zone Alarm is a firewall, NAV (Norton AntiVirus)is an AV. Where do you get he's running two AV's or two firewalls?

Like Duh, I didn't know that. I got it here smart a**. lol.

"I going to shut down NAV(Norton Anti-Virus) and see how it runs. I had been using Kaspersky AV Pro(Another Anti-Virus) for a long time..."

It sounded to me like he was running two Anti-Virus programs and he was going to shut down one of them. I read the firewall stuff somewhere in his posts too. It sounded like he was running a lot of conflicting programs. He must have a large CPU and lots of memory, I say.

As noted earlier:

dabe - that's an on going problem with OD...several times a day you need to close and re-start it to keep the handle count down. It's an issue that they know about and hopefully will be resolved in the near future.

Is it safe to upgrade to 4.5 yet?

Yes...version 4.5.538. Un-check 'Load on Startup' in ZA preferences and re-boot. After the re-start, install the new version as an upgrade. http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html

Well Chas I looked at the Task Manager pic of running processes she posted when she was trying to get help. It good to check out the details when you're trying to help someone with their rig to avoid giving advice that's a tad off the mark.
