My computer is really hanging............

..... and it's virtually unusable for some things. Like Photoshop. It took almost 4 minutes for PS to just load, never mind use anything. That's unacceptable, and I'm wondering what's causing it. My CPU load hovers around 20%, when normally it runs about 4-10% if I'm just idling.
I went into Task Manager looking for anything that may be the culprit. In the past, I had two versions of ObjectDock running. No good. But such isn't the case now. What I do have, however, is five copies of svchost.exe. I have no idea what that is, so I'm afraid to start shutting some down. Anyone know? I uploaded a shot of my desktop with taskmanager open, in the hopes that one of you can take a look at it, and maybe advise me about what may be hanging up my computer. Just click on my name to view it.

svchost is supposed to be there. object dock has some compatabiltiy problems with the earlier versions of photoshop (specifically photoshop 7). see how photoshop runs without objectdock running.

Try cleaning your registery (it`s quite easy) you need to take care which files you delete but this exercise is fantastic at speeding up your PC. Also get some XP tune up applications...I`ll have a look for some and post some links..

Please do not do anything to your registry. No offense intended, but if you don't know what svchost.exe is, you should not be playing in your registry where you can do critical damage to your computer. By the way, svchost.exe is a generic name for services which run from dynamic linked libraries (.dll) and you will find multiple instances of it running frequently when running programs under windows.

dabe, if he is willing to help you, which appears to be the case, listen to yrag. I'm going to back off now, because while I am not afraid to tackle things on my own computer, I don't feel qualified to talk someone else through solving problems on their system. Well Shameless Designs that`s great how is anyone supposed to inprove their computer knowlege without learing...Unless you personally wrote the JV16 program I would suggest you wait a little longer before posting too....
I was about to say DO NOT REMOVE ANTTHING FROM THE REGISTERY THAT YOU DO NOT RECOGNISE...However you will find shed loads of files that you have deleted in the past which are still lurking around in there....JV16 is a professional company who offer a full back up and help online even to those who are new to cleaning registery even on a trial down..

If you do need anymore help you can e-mail me...I will be willing to post some more tools which can help....PS the XP Professional Magazine is great for this type of "Shareware" tools and tuning...It takes a while but XP has so many defaults that can slow down your PC, you will find many such mags but I recomend this one as it has taught me a lot..

There's no need to mess with the registry, that isn't the problem. Try shutting down running programs one by one and see if that makes a difference.

I would also boot into a different user to see if it is something that runs across the whole of the base OS, or if it is user specific lending to an installed app playing Hooky with your resources...
Something you might want to do is download "TaskInfo2003"or a better process viewer which will allow you to see exactly what is doing and where it is doing it from...

OK, cool it, guys...
Important thing to remember is that not every source of information/help/expertise on the net is equal.
If you need to ask then chances are that dealing with the intestines of your Registry is not a good option, particularly if your comp is of the 'mission-critical' type [needed for work, etc].
Past experience has demonstrated that people such as yrag are quite conversant with hardware/system issues and his help 'should' be sought.
Much 'assistance' can be foolish at best and stupidly irresponsible at worst....

I am going to look at TaskInfo 2003. Also, Yrag has been helpful to me in the past, and I trust his judgment. Yrag, what do you mean by "tacked"? Do you mean tasked? Right now, my CPU is running at about 40%, and all I'm doing is writing this message. This sucks.
I have defragged, cleaned out temporary files, I ran a reg cleaner from Toni Arts, called EasyCleaner http://www.toniarts.com , which I have used in the past with no ill effects, but it's not handling the problem now.
If I drag a window, say my reduced sized SDC window across my desktop, it leaves a long "trail". That's an example of what I'm dealing with. If I try to work in Photoshop, the delay from when I try to "paint' till when the color actually changes is unworkable. I keep making mistakes, because I cannot predict where my cursor is going, or where it's been. This sucks.
As I said, I'll download TaskInfo, so at least it hopefully will give me more info. Thanks. I'll get back to you.

Sounds like something is robbing processor time....perhaps a trojan or other 'hidden' process....

I downloaded TaskInfo. A really amazing program. It gives me tons, and I mean TONS of information. Problem is, I don't know what any of it means.
Before I installed it, I shut down DX, Sysmetrics, anything open, like my browser, but I forgot to shut down Objectbar. No big deal, I don't think. Anyway, the only thing I have running now, in addition to OB, is SDC. I also opened Sysmetrix so I can monitor my CPU easily. So, I'm running minimal stuff, right?
Well, I just opened Microplanet Gravity to check a news group. Up pops this TaskInfo alert "Too Many GDI Objects" My alert level is set at <4,000 (default), and the GDI Objects Number is 4,056. Is the alert level set too low? Or, is something indeed eating up my processes?
Yrag, or anyone else, is there something in particular I should be looking for in TaskInfo that will specifically indicate the problem. As I said, there's just tons of info, and I don't know what I'm looking at.

I'm 53, and have been using computers for years, at work I do major mapping with ESRI's ArcView software. At home, I surf the internet, process my digital photographs, and mess with Photoshop. And now, I play with my desktop. I'm a user. Plain and simple. This stuff is beyond me. Waaaaaaaaaaa.......
