you're right that the graphics cards are the same....but macs are set up to handle graphics better...
and it is more stable because it is UNIX based... that's a well known fact...

I hate it when people say this. it is true that it is based off of unix, but that has very little meaning to its stability. The programmers can and do make mistakes. Unix is not a "god" language and is entitled to mistakes. osx does crash, just not often. in fact from what I know xp and osx are about equal in terms of stability.
Quartz is just a fancy word for opengl
here is what apple says about it:

Try putting 8GB of RAM into a PC. Not gonna happen.
But on the discussion of software, specifically Final Cut Pro 4, Almost all editing is in real time, the filters are amazing and much more abundant than Adobe's...and put to use on the mac, aka the G5 or even dual g4, it is incredibly fast.
If the PC was better for graphics and vid editing, people would use it. But they don't. Well some do, but it's the industry standard for a reason.

I agree as a former "UNIX is god" believer.

You really are miserable. I feel sorry for you know. I'm really sorry TC, I really am. Anything that I can do? Didn't think so...
Well, believe it or not, Macs can use the wallpapers and icons here. And I can bet you that a lot of mac traffic comes here.
But I am sad to say that right now I am using a PeeCee. the worst computer I've ever used. I have a mac, for graphics and vid editing, but this is my CD burning, internet viewing, AOL chatting machine... That's all it's good for.

OK, first, someone mentioned OS war? No such thing. Macs hold a huge 2% to 3% of the computer market. But it's stable there, have been for a few years, no increase, no decrease.
The fact is this: if you work in the graphics industry, get a Mac, if you work in anything else, get a PC.
And BTW: Macs ARE INDEED better for graphics. Do the test yourself. And even do it with a lesser processor for the Mac. Say a 1 Ghz proc for the Mac and a 2.2 Ghz for the PC. Same amount of memory (make that 1 Gig of RAM). Open Photoshop. Open a large image (say a 1 Gig TIF file). Now do some manipulations. Crops, resize, rotate. Apply some filters (try a radial blur on that image, you'll have fun... you'll probably have time to go get a coffee - at the coffee shop at the corner - and come back before your PC is done processing it, if it doesn't crash in te meantime. That's a fact, tested and true. Try it yourself, you'll see.
I'm not sure though if it's because the machine itself is better. I doubt it, cause where everything else but graphics is concerned, I hate Macs, I find them slower and and clumsiers than PC's. I think that maybe the reasson for this increased performance for grahics apps on the Pcs is that the software manufacturer make them first for the Mac and then afterwards make a Windows version. believe the software is probably optimized to work better and faster on a Mac.
A friend of mine at work just bough the new G5. Guess how long it took him to resize a 30 GIG document? 5 seconds. OK, he has 4 Gigs of RAM in there, but still...
Anyway, the bottom line is as I first said: If you work in a company that makes graphics, you'll need a Mac, otherwise just get a PC.

1. Macs, comparably configured, cost the same, if not less, than PCs. Yes you can get a barebones peecee for $300, but if you want something that is as good as a $1700 G5, you'll need a $1700 PC.
2. Not true at all. Apple's video editing software is the industry standard for a reason. They do something no other software company can. AND it's only available for the mac. And to add to the list, GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie...iLife altogether.
3. Yes, PCs have 50,000 progs, while mac has something like 7,000...but who wants 500 solitare progs, or 10,000 craptastic games...all of the well known software that is available for the PC is available for the mac. That includes games too.
