Question for iTunes users. . .

I would like to know if there is a way to play the tracks that I dl from iTunes in Winamp. Seems like they are save in a file type that WA doesn't play, or am I just doing something wrong?

I haven't figured out how to either. supposedly winamp5 supports aac (the format itunes are saved in), but apple must have done something strange with them because I have tried hard to get them to work, and they just won't.

well, you should be able to use the same technique I use to play tracks I've purchased on Napster on my iPod. Burn them to a CD then use your favorite ripper to rip them to MP3.

yes you could do that, but in doing so you might lose a lot of the quality. When the aac is turned into a wav to be put on the cd it still has its idiosyncrasis...its not the same as the wav that was turned into the aac. And turning that wav back into an mp3 opens up the possibility that those idiosyncrasis will be noticed. Not to mention the fact that you just wasted a cd.

itunes downloads aac. actually m4p but it is aac

The files are AAC.

You aren't doing a thing wrong papidon. Apple made it hard to do this, the iTunes song come in a propietary AAC format they they developed, I believe?

However there is finally a working plugin for Winamp 2 and 5. I'm using it right now.

I am going to try that little plugin. Thanks stockholm. But right now I have to reinstall iTunes...seems that apple's program isn't completely stable

I can't seem to get it to work. I have winamp5, and iTunes. my computer is authorized. Is there any other steps I have to take?

I am assuming you installed it to your winamp/plugins folder.


Did you go in and start the plugin?
If not, in your preferences there is a place you need to go in and turn on the plugin. Go to Options, visualizations, select plugin, input, and just highlight the itunes one, which should be in here. Highlighting it turns it on. Then just hit close at the bottom, and you should be able to go play your itunes songs.

just won't start. It says the song is loaded in winamp and shows the title. but push play and nothing happens.

why don't you just tell itunes to convert them to mp3?

i moved to mp3 format so i know it will play on anything. dvd players, care stereos and such are still catching up with putting mp3 technology in.. it'll be a while yet for aac.. keep everything mp3 and it will play anywhere.

I can notice the difference in sound quality between the formats. I know you could make the mp3 have a higher bitrate, but space is a concern of mine.

Hey Stockholm, it worked! Only thing due to Quicktime limitations I can't use the EQ or Visualizations, but that I don't mind.
