I'll go to the moon, but you will have to pay me. 
Actually I think a little interest in the space program wouldn't hurt. I'd rather see tax money go to that instead of defense. we spend more on defense then any other country, and most of it is wasted in my opinion, but I don't know where it all goes though.

Only if it is real and not just some political hyperbol...
Hell DC has gotten so ingrained in NASA that they cook the book on safety and then act all shocked when people die. As it sits it would turn into just another Cash cow for Corporations and Special Interest groups.
We should have been on the Moon for the past 30 years and have been branching out further. Also mining Asteroids and possibly Comets for water, gold and other industrial materials. We could have been mining Helium 3 for fuel in Space craft and have a launch base Moon side for deeper exploration.

It never happened the first time. It was all one big government setup filmed in Oz - hey wait a sec!
Anyhow, if you are to believe everything you're told about the future, I'd expect us to fly around in hovercars and travel the galaxy by now. Instead, we fly around in aircrafts that were designed aeons ago and waste our time crashing satellites into Mars.
This whole space thing is going nowhere. I don't expect to see any serious space colonies this century.

We have the technology there is just no motivation to use it. I am positive that as of right now you could set up a colony on the moon and it would be livable on a permanent basis. Of course supplies would have to be ferried to the colony occasionally and other small details would have to be worked out, but it is possible. Now if somebody could find a financial reason to jumpstart the dying space movement. I think we should explore space because in doing so it would require us to increase our levels of technology. The space program used to be at the forefront of emerging technologies and a lot of which got applied to everyday use. I believe that someday we will branch off into space, if not for money then for necessity.

This I believe is just the beginning, as the rest of the U.S. climbs on this bandwagon.

How about we put the money toward our economy? Give every man, woman, and child in the US $5000. That would still be less money than it would take to go to the moon again. And which do you think would help the economy more?

Given the monstrous costs of space travel/exploration, that's just a drop in the bucket, White_Moth.
I don't think the exploitation of space for gain, such as IP mentioned, will happen until private companies/entrepeneurs get into the act. If there is money to be made, someone will do it eventually, assuming the 'government' will let them. Until then, space travel will be, for the most part, an altruistic endeavor, limited by the amount of money people are willing to fund through the government.

Return on investment....there is none in the above scenario and there probably isn't any if the government is involved in the space colony. Make it a private venture and then the space colony would help the economy the most.

I must say...the idea of going to the moon fascinates me. I think it would be the coolest thing and the most awesome use of technology. But frankly, I also think it would be a total waste of money and time. The money would be much better spent helping people on earth rather than helping people get off earth. Regardless of what current state the economy may be.

why do governments cut the wrong things. here in tennessee we have the worst public education system in the USA. however the powers here decided to start a lottery to help with the school system, and as a first step they hired one person to organize everything and paid here around the sum 700,000 dollars. and all I can do is ask why. I think there is enough money floating around in the government to more then pay for another space expedition if only somebody would cut the fat from the system.

hey the Homeless issue took care of it self, no more homeless, of course you have to adjust yor blinders now and then or you will see at least 10 different homeless people a day in St Petersburg and even more if you go down town, but there isn't anyone homelss anymore, nope, all gone, besides they don't vote so they must not exist...
I actually had two different people try to convince meof this over the last two years...

Homeless in America is the reason i don't send monies overseas to sponser a child in far off contries. We would be alot better off if we lowered the cost of living a bit and got these people jobs and off the streets.
