Post here to get rated

Wednesday, January 7, 2004 by Gear7 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I lost the ratings on my "Island" and "3OE" wallpapers. It would be greatly appreciated if some of you could help me out and rate them for me.

...and if any of you had some ratings wiped out during the last server problem, post here with the names of the skins so I and others can rate them.

Post the specific links, G7. If I like them, I'll rate them. If not, I won't hurt. lol.

I think there should be people who a "job" here of rating skins. I think that the job "rater" would help keep the ratings more accurate. of course these raters would have to responsible adults that aren't blind. And others could still rate, but their ratings would be worth a little less then the "raters" or there would be two ratings like at winamp.com.

This rating system has a couple of big flaws that need to be fixed someday. At least making the people with the ability to rate understand the responsibilty and the necessity of rating would be a good start.

The ratings are important due to the way the system is designed. From my understanding, if a piece has a rating of below 6, it doesn't even show up unless you are a resgistered user.
Also, I don't believe a skin shows in the "Newest Additon" section unless it has a certain rating or higher.
Granted, some items warrant this filter mechanism, but speaking from personal experience, I have had my ratings "slammed" before. Some items which now hold a 8+ rating were initially rated as a 2 or 3 and did not even show up on the above mentioned lists. You can't leave it all up to 1 person either, as that would be even more unfair.
My vote... let just the Admins (as a GROUP) do the ratings. Don't even bother displaying the ratings to users at all. This takes care of the filtering and possibility of slamming while preventing someones bubble from being burst as well.

yes you can't leave it to one person, but if you got a group of say 20 to 30 people who have the responsibilty of rating I think you would have the best results. Just having the admins rate not only puts undue stress on them (because they have the single responsibility of giving correct ratings) you forget that they too might be subject to prejudice if left to their own devices (they have no overseer besides their admin peers who might look the other way). However, if this group was moderated by the admins in case one of the members started to falter in their responsibilty then the group would stay unbiased and should make good decisions as a whole about the ratings.

Think of it like a courtroom. The rating group would be the jury, the judge would be the admins, the defendent would be the author, the defense lawyer and the prosecuter would be represented by the comments. Then you would have a hopefully unbiased decision from a group of individuals picked by the admins, and criticized or praised by the users in the comments. The "raters" would look to the comments for advice and common opinion. The admins would moderate the comments like they always do and would keep an eye on the jury to make sure that they aren't screwing around.

Just my opinion

How about if the Journeymen (and women) rate? They have proven their ability/skills to determine how good something is, both technically and aesthetically.

That would probably work too. But I think that if they did there should be two ratings one from the normal people with the ability to rate and another from the journeypeople

I think some people think they have a right to hurt the efforts of others. I am not like that. Some people even abuse their rating priviledges by giving inappropiate low ratings. I am not like that. I want to encourage others not discourage. I don't go through the skins giving ratings to everything that I don't like and saying this is a "2", you a "3". I am sure there are enough people out there who get a thrill giving low ratings to the efforts of other skinners. I am just not one of them. The last rating that I gave, I believe it was a "8" or "9", and I downloaded it. I even left a comment. I don't have time to critique bad works. And, I won't give a low rating to a fellow artist without trying to give some constructive criticism. And if that isn't enough reason for you, the last time I checked this was still a free world. And, not a world with a bunch of clones all following the ideals of one person.

Gear7, I went through your library. I hate doing that. Especially if the artist has a huge library. It takes forever. But,I especially liked Assembly, that was too cute with the eye. Control Pad too was very nice with the electricity effect. I thought you had very nice and appreciative ratings myself. Keep up the good work.

If I think it sucks, then it gets a bad rating. If I think it's great, it gets a good rating. If I think it's ok, it gets a middle rating. I haven't been rating very much lately. I'm sick of the fact that there are so many pansies here that only want feel-good ratings and comments. Well, sometimes it does suck.

There's no consistency. Just get rid of the ratings.

I agree, it does make me wonder about the whole rate system.
For instance, I submitted an icon and got a "6"
I then submitted the same icon, but a different color and it got a "3" Go figure.
Then I see some members icons submitted that you can clearly tell was a cut/paste and/or a simple basic beginners icon that gets a "7" or higher. Ratings really don't matter to me, especially when I don't know who or where they're coming from, but it is a bit discouraging

such as mine.... but yes I also think ratings do not really matter. You like what you like and others will always disagree.

I personally rate everything, good or bad, unless its something that isn't the type of art that I'm into. For instance "girly" stuff with lots of flowers and such. I'm also not real big on lanscapes, so I leave that up to the people who are, because its difficult for me to differentiate between a good and bad landscape wall.

PS Thanks ChasUGC

I think downloads represent a better indication of a skin that ratings. You will get a much more true rating if it was rated by 1000 people than you would if it was rated by 10 people. If you have a 1000 different ratings then you have 1000 different opinions, so if you still rate high, a more true indication. Just getting a rating on this site is not an easy task, I wonder why all the people that do have the power to rate never really use it. I hardly ever rate works, don't know why either. It just doesn't come to mind whenever I look at a skin...
