Football Thread (real football, not the faux macho stuff)

Seeing as an NFL thread was started, I'd like to start a football thread (soccer) for all those football enthusiasts out there.
I guess I'll start the discussion off by talking about American players in the Premiership.
I think the best American player in the Premier League would have to be Timmy Howard (affectionately called T-Ho). T-Ho is, IMHO, the best keeper in the League, and one of the best in the world, going neck in neck with Brad Friedel (American) and Kahn (German, duh).
Also, a hot rumor topic, is Clint Mathis, the star American player who just left the Metrostars, and now isn't signed to a team OR league! I've heard some rumors, and these ARE just rumors, but I've heard that the Premier League, Man U in particular, is interested. That would be amazing! I's good to see that American soccer is getting a good nod...we've always been recognized for our keepers, but now with Mathis available, and McBride's recent loan at Everton, I think the strikers are becoming known too!

Now we are talking.........this is "the game".......do you ever get chance to see the Spanish League games? I love watching "El Galacticos" Real Madrid play.....what a team.....Rinaldo, Raul, Beckham, Figo, Zidane. My Sunday nights would be empty without them

are you so sure about that kona. The superbowl is one game. The world cup has a lot of games with millions of viewers for each one. I was in GB at the time of the world cup and by george I only saw about 2 tvs without it on and in a lot of shops the radio had it on too. I visited Ireland too and even a higher percentage watched the game there.
I wonder if the superbowl has more the final match of the world cup. It would be interesting if somebody could find out.

Actually Kona, soccer is the most watched sport in the world. And the World Cup, which is a series of matches leading up to one final match, is surely much more watched than the Superbowl. The final World Cup match has more viewers than the Superbowl. Also, American Football is, well, American, and despised in many other countries, but soccer is a universally watched and enjoyed sport.

Like the 'world' series baseball... where are the non-American teams ???

i don't know. I grew up in tennessee and it has the worst education system in america. of course i went to private schools because the public ones were so bad...

haha kona, well, at least that's a start!
WE, I only watch Man U because of Timmy Howard, despite the fact that he barely gets any action when hes out there because the defense is so damn good! I do like Man U, but I'm more of an Arsenal fan myself. That, and a New England Revolution fan for the States.

Only footy match I've ever seen [and I live in the home of Aussie Rules] was Arsenal vs Stoke City.....1973....[Arsenal won]...
At the moment we are in the midst of trying NOT to be thrashed by the Indians in the Cricket....if only there were a minimum height limit for players they'd be stuffed....

Not a big footie watcher. The last match I saw was in 1972 when Sheff Wed played Santos. We only went to see Pele.
