Data Mining - A Big No No

Friday, November 21, 2003 by T-Man | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

We recently discovered a site  (http://www.adsdot.net/dl/)that was mining data from WinCustomize and was displaying the data as their own. (Thanks GoodMorphing for pointing this out)

If you navigate to their site at click on the Wallpapers or Skins links you will notice that they are no longer mining our data. Tsk Tsk Tsk.

It really ticks me off when people do that!  Jerks!

#16, what do you think you will make when you do that with wincustomise.com (note the S instead of Z) or gogle.com

has anybody informed download.com of their links being on that page. They probably would appreciate it, and even more funny messages would occur

Love the war now being waged against adsdot.net. Here come da judge. Sock-it to 'em, sock-it to 'em.

Old Crab sits back and munchs on some popcorn. Next salvo.

Really this is serious. Does Stardock & WC have anyway to find such miscreants without having someone like GM on the lookout? >

Actually, it is ironic and a real near miss, that I found this site. I was wondering who that was who was looking for Greyelk. I typed Greyelk's name into the search on the avant browser and kept finding his name mentioned, but the links kept telling me that I was not authorized....... soooooooooooo, I wanted to see why. I manipulated the address a few different ways and finally this site opened. If I hadn't done that then, I would have missed finding the site, since mention of Greyelk would be gone.

Not sure how everything is set up but they ought to be able to do an server-side ALLOW type thing to prevent deep-linking the items. Granted, the more sites that use the info the harder it would be. I guess the wincusto browser would have to be taken into account as well.

I realize that makes me look like a very nosy person, but I really am not. I wouldn't do that to invade someone's privacy.......

Yep....Diane needs a right, good round of applause for tripping over this site.

She passed the info onto me....I had a quick look and passed it on to the 'guys with the guns'....and it was 'fixed'...

So....thanks again, GM for what ya dun....

yeppers GM did it good with that and we all owe her a big hug and thanks...

People doing DM really eat up bandwidth, and if you think about how many hits this site gets on its own, imagine it having to deal with a number of sites with say only one thrid the hits daily almost doubling normal bandwidth use?

sheesh...

grrrrrr posers suck...
