Data Mining - A Big No No

Friday, November 21, 2003 by T-Man | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

We recently discovered a site  (http://www.adsdot.net/dl/)that was mining data from WinCustomize and was displaying the data as their own. (Thanks GoodMorphing for pointing this out)

If you navigate to their site at click on the Wallpapers or Skins links you will notice that they are no longer mining our data. Tsk Tsk Tsk.

It really ticks me off when people do that!  Jerks!

Pardon my ignorance but what does data mining mean in this context?

that rat must be the Mascott...

DataMining is using other sources as a data source and pulling information down to put into into usable format for on line content, in one type of use....

It is used a lot in the Medical Industry, such as at the WebMD website...

My guess is that they were deep linking and downloading from this site and people were thinking it was comming from their site. Just a guess.

They are using a script (http://www.fodic.com/ADS/DL/Wall.aspx) that makes a connection to our pages.  Then they strip out a section from our page and then output it to the user in the frame on their page.

"Funny if they sent it to Isreal."

That'd be priceless.

I know I've banged on this old drum before, but we have just begun to see trouble from nations like Iran. I really, really think that if there is any threat that will splinter the internet, it won't be differences in politics or morality, it will be rogue nations like Iran that realize how much money they can make as havens to people who want to be outside western reach.

China is in the spot light right now for that exact some thing you mention Bakerstreet...

It is going to get extreamly nasty in the near future I am thinking...

I tried to have a site in a small north African country taken down for months a while back. It's ISP would send me back messages in what I thought was Arabic, but what I found out later was just childish gibberish. The site eventually disappeared anyway, but there was literally no recourse for me but to sit and fume. The law couldn't touch them, their ISP was either neutral or in cahoots, and the only other way to silence it was to censor their little part of the internet, which seemed to contain legit sites. I guess they ran out of cash.

With politics as it is, this will be really ugly in the future, I think.

most register sites now offer domain security so sites can not be hijacked. It is worth the extra 5.00 - 10.00 dollars a year. We pay it for five domains and haven't had any problem. Kinda of wrong that they charge you anything for it in my opinion, when you register a domain, the security protecting it from being hijacked should come with it in the price. Kind of like buying a car and being told "Oh you mean you want door locks and for it to need Keys to start? That's extra"

Mine wasn't a hijacked site, unfortunately. It was a kid's themed site that was land-mined with numerous stills of the Daniel Pearl beheading and the video of such. Not unlike the sick jerk that was buying up mispellings of kids sites and pointing them at 'black holes' full of pr0n popups. That guy was making a million dollars a year, according to the news reports, anyway.

Fortunately there must've not been much money in fooling kids into seeing a beheading.

Good job T-Man! I wonder how long it will take them to notice the nice message the walls get when they click on the links?

YIPPEEEEE!!!!!!!

I wondered how you were going to do that. They linked to whole entire libraries and I was afraid everyone was going to have to change their uploads! I love what you did!

HEHE..... this statement on their site really got to me: ADS SKIN GALLERY is a desktop enhancement suite designed to allow users to turbo-charge their Windows experience. It's like getting the next version of Windows today!

..now where have I heard that statement before? From real, honest, hardworking, computer genii, that's where! SHEESH!

I can't even begin to put into words how angry I get when I see this stuff. Geeez, especially when done to "One of the Fam". I just wanna pinch somebody's head off (there's). I'm glad we're resourceful enough to SOMETHING. I agree with BakerStreet....AGAIN... I think as these other nations become more prevelant on the web we're going to have some real issues with it.
