Harry Potter books are evil?

Monday, October 27, 2003 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

OK regardless of what you believe in, I found this comment by a woman at CBN amusing.

She said that all of the Harry Potter books are evil and you should through them out of your household.

Here is a link to some of the discussions:

Personally I think Harry Potter is just a kids tale.

If they say that Harry Potter is evil and Witch craft, What about such classics as Lord Of The Rings and other stories about evil?

Potter isn't even remotely evil (or even marginally bad) by any rational definition.

The personal qualities exemplified by Harry Potter and his friends are the kind of personal qualities that should be instilled in every person, courage, loyalty, honesty, and even a little bending of the rules where necessary .

Pretty much the only people who are opposed to something like Potter are those people who are deathly afraid of anything that teaches children to think for themselves and question what they learn (both very vital parts of growth). Such people are only interested in indoctrinating children rather than teaching them, and that's pretty sad.

Yeah, I know it's a bit of a generalization about these types of people, but I can't imagine anyone who isn't already a bit whacko actually believing that Potter, et.al. is evil.

Sure it has evil in it. It's called He who must not be named.

Same time like others said, lots of morals in it, and encouraging kids to read is never evil.

Unless you are part of a repressive goverment that's trying to supress information in order to hold on the power.

Sometimes I think Christians just lose focus and become too self-righteous, and then they pick apart the most popular worldly thing. Right now, its Harry Potter. Tommorrow, its something else.

It's Just, (I Repeat) It's Just possible that Star Trek could be considered evil in someone's eyes, or has nobody noticed there is no religeon nor Xmas, nor Easter in any of the episode.

I'm not trying to create conflict, I just noticed this that's all

Fporgot to mention that I consider that books, films and games like Harry Potter, LOTR, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons are just plain and simple entertainment.

Star Trek can be evil if you belong to a cult that is waiting on the mother ship disguised as a comet. ANyone ever hear the Bif Naked's "Porno Brainwash?" ( http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bif-naked/17312.html ) Obviously Harry Potter can be evil to unhealthy people who think pretend magic is evil. People feed their sicknesses with all sorts of things. Fundamentalist religion is just one choice.

On the other end of the spectrum, religion can be evil to people who are frightened of it. I don't see the aforementioned "Harry Potter" paranoia any different than a few other conversations I have seen about the oft-vilified Christianity here lately. You can make a monster out of anything if you are convinced enough that it *is* a monster. I'd be willing to bet before this string is over someone will rant to the heavens of how evil all this 'religion' stuff is. Silly Muggles.

I find nothing wrong with a few books based on witchcraft.  Of course, that may also be because my family tree has a couple hangings in it.  (Rebecca Nurse and Mary Este, to be exact).  They were sisters, and their maiden name was "Towne" (which is also my maiden name, and I have *a lot* of "Mary Towne" relatives..at least 3 that are still alive....)..... I may weigh the same as a duck....

I wouldn't mind visiting Rebecca Nurse's homestead.

I could see how people from the "700 club" (which is who this interview was with) would have a problem with the books.  I don't see them as "evil" but they do have a definite dark tone to them.

Remember "Puff the magic dragon"? Widely denounced as a song promoting drugs. People have noted pornographic images in Disney movies. If you stand on your head and squint while playing any Disney movie at 1/4 speed, you'll eventually see Donald Duck doing nasty things to the three pigs or some other such nonsense.

There's enough serious problems and stress in this poor old world without inventing problems. Now it's back to my potions and cauldron!
