Curtains vs WindowBlinds

WTF

Wednesday, May 4, 2022 by RedneckDude | Discussion: Curtains

Hey guys, did I read somewhere that applying a windowblind skin will automatically unload Curtains and vice versa?

If so, I have issues.  I was testing a Curtains skin for someone, and loaded a WB to test for someone else, and I ended up with a screwed up mix of the 2 skins.

I had to unload curtains and reapply the WB in order to fix it.

Is this normal?

Switching between the two can be a little less than ideal, I usually see it in the taskbar buttons - I think they sometimes get stuck on the Win10 default.  Don't know that I've ever seen the two mix, but...?

My routine is that I tend to stay in one or the other, and log out/in after switching between the two.

I had conflicts similar to what you both mention, so I removed Curtains.

I got tiles from the curtains skin on the WB start menu, plus the taskbar buttons from the curtains remained as well.

Well, I'm trying to test a curtains skin for someone.  Otherwise I would remove it as well.

Yes for me. Since I keep loading and unloading different skins between Curtains and WB for testing Forums issues from others. Usually it temporary thing. Reboot will resolve it. Don't think its a big thing since not everyone will be keep changing between Curtains and WB every few hours.

Jim, why not pm Neil? I'm sure he could explain/resolve the issue.
I am a Master skinner (you would think it comes with some perks, but..) I have Pm'd Neil on several occasions, but I don't think I was replied to even once so I'm not sure that is a very fruitful suggestion.

-If you want to be SURE to get a reply, PM Jafo . Unfortunately he doesn't have answers to all the questions though.

-I understand that everybody has got a lot on their plate etc, it's just that it gets extremely frustrating having a problem and turning to the Forum at hand, not getting proper help, solutions or viable suggestions.

(On a sidenote, I had similar issues with the programs in question myself.)

Deleted my comment as I'd just pm'd Neil about the thread.

Believe me: Neil answers when he can.

He darts about like a long tailed Tom in a room full of rockers...to mix metaphors, he has lots of software skillets on the fire, so if he doesn't answer for a while, that's ok by me.

Not saying this just to mollify nor to be patronizing...c'est juste comme ça.

I am at Master status as well, but not sure that means I get answered any faster than the next guy. Not sure it should. But we try, eh?

With due respect, it IS a big deal.  I don't want to have to reboot every time I change a skin.  Easier to just unload one before loading the other.  BUT, I do believe it has been reiterated several times that loading one automatically unloads the other.  This is the real point of my thread.  If it doesn't work like that, why say that it does.

For what it's worth, it doesn't really bother me, and somehow it's understandable to me that a log off/in would be very helpful when switching programs that skin Windows.

Prior to loading the WB skin first use Curtains to load the Windows default skin and then use WB to load the WB skin.  When switching from WB to Curtains use WB to switch to the windows default skin then load the Curtains skin.  That's what I used to do when I was on Windows 10.  I'm still holding my breath being on Windows 11 and do not have any UI software running at all, although I would like to.

I am sorry, I should have put there "not a big deal for me". As for someone who might be changing skin every few hours or minutes for testing. I, would like to suggest to do it on a VM setup. Instead of your main rig. Just my 2 cents.

And on what does work or doesn't work, I did not say it work or not. I just said how I deal with the issue.

Pretty much what I said, but still.

Would make no difference. I'd still have to reboot the VM, or change to default skin before applying the other.

Generally speaking applying a WB skin will disable a curtains skin and vice versa.

Universal apps may however be less happy due to how they work and how WB and Curtains have very different ways to implement things.

A sign out in between would be ideal, rebooting shouldn't do anything different to sign out / in.

Interesting...but Neil, why isn't there an option to unload Curtains, as there is for WB?

Setting the Windows Default theme would stop Curtains.

Jim, here's one other thought for what it's worth -

If you're finding yourself wanting to look at Curtains skins and primarily running WB, set up or use another user login and leave it loading with Curtains.  You can then just "Switch User" to poke at the Curtains skins, avoids the full log out/in.  I've used that approach when parked in Curtains and wanting to look at WB/SKS.
