AMBER Alert for websites

Friday, September 26, 2003 by joetheblow | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I think that there should be an AMBER Alert for websites.

How it could work is similiar to how it works already for highway signs and TV.

What would happen is that when one is given small 15x300 banner (kinda like a stock ticker) would show just below the top of the homepage of a site and say who is missing and to look out for the child.

What do you think? If you like the idea please send an email to:

Thank you.

AMBER Alert is a way of helping to find lost chilren by basically alerting the whole area about the child.

Forgot to mention that.

You mean adding a missing persons banner to this site?

Is it possible for a child to get lost on the Internet?

Seriously though, as this is a site which is viewed by people from all over the world, such a local-focussed scheme really wouldn't be viable.

That would be a good use for a desktopX object with it pointing to a website that can localize the info that is served to the object (so it is only showing alerts for your geographic location).  It could then sit on the desks of anyone who signs up at the page that is serving it.  Would be a good thing to have at security centers in shopping malls, or even as a way of alerting "concerned" citizens in neighborhood watch programs.

You could go here and sign up to receive E-Mail notifications of Missing Children, which also acts as part of the Amber Alert system.

Never heard of Amber alert before. Is it named after a missing child named Amber?

Anyway, I'm both with grayhaze and Karmagirl. It's too region specific to be valuable on an international web site (imagine posting information about every missing child in the World!!). But something that would sit on one's desktop and only show info for your region would be nice.  Not that I'd use it though, there is no way I could recognise anybody on the street. Don't ask me to describe anybody sitting next to me on the train this morning, I have no idea.

Yes, the Amber alert was named after a child that was abducted.  Her parents fought to get the system in place, which has been successful.  In Michigan, our major highways have panels for traffic alerts.  They also post amber alert inf o(like a type of car to look for) if needed on them.

It probably could be a viable technology if it were provided with a region stamp that could corrilate with your home area. But I have to wonder, and I am not trying to cruel, whether anyone would take the two seconds to look at it! People try not to take notice to banners as it is and software is available to remove them. So, is it viable maybe, is it practicle I just don't know?

Yeah, I guess some how making it regional is better. Like the banner would only come up if it is in you region or maybe a DX object.

BTW, I don't mean banner like a ad, I mean it more like a stock ticker or something. I thought that, while even on the internet, you could get info and when you do go outside you would watch out for the missing child if you see her/him.

It could be the next day but it would still help to have extra eyes looking.

No I wasn't specifically sying to have it here on this site. What I was asking for is an opinion on the idea and if you think it is valid then give them and email asking for such a program because as far as I know or researched one does not exist.
