OK so I use Windows 98...

Friday, September 26, 2003 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Can I use DX?
Can I use Windowblinds?

Witch versions can I use of either programs? And where do I get them?

Call me cracked but I am finally sick of the "Microsoft look"

I want to look for a theme that makes my taskbar black... and go from there.

Thanks, Kona

C'mon Kona...You've been here how long? You can answer those questions yourself

If I was using 98 I would be sick of the Microsoft look too

One question...Why would you use 98 anyways?

It had windows 2k when I got it. I agreed to wipe the HD after I bought. Besides i did not know the password to get in. So since XP will not run on it nicely and ME sucks that left me with 98...

Why not wait till you get your new pc?

Anyway, I believe you can use up to Windowblinds 3.5 with 98. I have no idea about DesktopX. I would imagine your video card isn't all that great either right now. So you'll be pushing it evem more probably suffering performance.

I run XP on my sons 266 w/128 Meg and it runs fairly smoothly, actualy better than I was betting when I set it up. It won't set any land speed records. The HD is a little small, since XP would probibly eat around 1 Gig of it, but 20 Gig hard drives are cheap.

not really. i just checked prices today. $155 is as low as I could find them without ordering from another state.

Are OEM copies of Windows XP allowed for home users building their own system? If you want to save money, get Windows XP Home. It's the same thing and is all you need if you are not planning on having a system with dual processors or running a server. If you are going to be running a server then Linux is a much better choice due to it's longer uptimes.

I have to agree, where did you look to get that price? I mean - maybe - if we were talking about an ultra scsi, then maybe I could understand, but there is no way that you would pay $155 for a 20gig hard drive! But thats besides the point - get one. And as for running XP on your machine, not with a 3.9GIG hard drive you aint! By the time you have loaded XP and all your system resources - you will have already used close to a GIG of space, then you have software, then on top of that you need pagefile space. No, XP not a good idea for your system. Windows 2K uses about half the resources as XP so it is probably a good comprimise.

As for you system - well, I would probably use Windowblinds 3.5 - but DX will probably eat alot of resources on your machine, so I would most likely see how the system runs with just WB, the try DX, see what kind of damage your lookin at and if you can live with it, then just use it! Personaly I like what DX has to offer but I would like to see a good, well balanced design of asthetics and functionality, which is extremely lacking with most designers. They usually prefer to make them asthetically pleasing but then either go crazy putting stuff in that has no place on a desktop or leaving stuff out which would benefit a desktop. So I just stick with a nice, asthetically pleasing skin that uses less resources.

Wha...? Last month I bought a 80Gb 7200rpm drive for £60 (approx $90). You need to shop around a bit.

Maybe it would be easier to just get an already made system if you can't find parts at good prices.

Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!

I have to buy certain models that are compatible with my system... hence the price. Some drives will not work with this notebook.

BTW vtech..I hate dell.

I thought you were talking about a drive for you new PC.

If that's the kind of price your looking at for a drive for your notebook(that's not even upgradable)...why even bother...scrap it and put your money into a real system

my thoughts exactly. but instead of scraping it, it will become my test sled for linux.

BTW the HD is upgradeable and so is the proscessor...but thats about it unless i want a 24x CRRW drive for 99 bucks from dell.

I didn't mean to literally throw it away...

I mean, 'Do not even put one more penny into that machine'...It's just not worth it
