Can I use Windowblinds?
Witch versions can I use of either programs? And where do I get them?
Call me cracked but I am finally sick of the "Microsoft look"
I want to look for a theme that makes my taskbar black... and go from there.

Linux will NOT be part of new system until I learn it real good using this laptop.

I got an OEM CD of Win98.....[without a system]...but only because I knew the guys at the shop. OEM copies are specifically intended for inclusion with complete systems....not DIY parts....

Hmm...You know, you probably could run XP on that. Just disable 70" of the services, turn off Themes, and it might run "sweet as a babys bottom." 
However, I agree that using it a Linux test box is a good idea, becuase it is a lot less resource hungry than Win9x or XP. A new computer, I think, would be the best option. Besides, with the economny the way it is, you can get something dirt cheap from ABSPC.com or anyplace, really, with a substantial amount of power. I DO think they should change that motto...Dude you're getting a dell -- Why not try Dude, you're goin' to hell? I like the sound of that!

Kona you can pick up the 'Full' version of XP Home for $96.
You can read thishttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp to decide if XP Pro is that crucial for what you do...I don't see you really needing to spend that much extra for things you probably don't need or will ever use

Sigh. All versions of XP are NTFS.
The Pro version of XP has additional elements purely for client/server networks and offers no practical benefit for the home user.

Kona...You obviously don't need Pro...Do yourself a favor and save some money and buy the Home edition and apply the extra 50-60 dollars towards something more beneficial

Well... I am forced to use (through lack of funding from my wallet) Win98 and I can say that you can run Windowblinds easy.
Object bar might be a problem when running programs that need allot of ram, and DX you can only use 1.3 safely and no animations (other stuff will just crash)
I bought a hard drive 3 years ago I beleieve, 20 gigs for 80 dollars. It got to be less than that by now. (CompUSA)

not really. i just checked prices today. $155 is as low as I could find them without ordering from another state.

You can set up a dual boot system for WinXP and Linux on your new PC. If you are building your new PC yourself, you can choose components that are guarenteed to be Linux compatible.
