Advice re: possible worm???

Wednesday, September 17, 2003 by goodmorphing | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Suddenly IE won't work at all. I have tried sys restore. Cannot access online virus scan. Norton not finding anything at all. I was thinking about re-installing from disc, but if it is a worm or virus it might wipe out the disc. What should I do?

word works, defrag works, sys restore works, netscape works, trillian works.

If this comes through underlined it is not intentional...

Just for a follow up.... still working fine, even rebooted. Things seemed faster so I did a speed test, and it more than doubled (I was thinking cable was nice, but not THAT nice... now it is THAT nice!)!

...of course it could be just a good night for surfing.

It's baaaaaaaaaaack! I was only able to connect via netscape again. Looking in the task manager, the modem was not there but it acted like it was. I went to config sys, and the modem was unchecked. I thought it might work to "reset" it, so I checked the box, rebooted, unchecked it, rebooted. Problem remained. I went back to config sys, and the box was still checked! So I re- unchecked it, re-applied that new setting, rebooted. STILL checked. Now, I have it unchecked but I have not rebooted.

Why does that modem keep coming back in the startup?

Have you disabled it in Device Manager? If that doesn't work physically remove it from the box! That's what I did with mine when I moved to DSL.

Fuzzy is right...Windows keeps detecting your modem...you need to open case and remove modem card(be brave, it's easy). Shutdown and turn off power, touch metal case before the card...take out retaining screw and pull card out. Close case and fire it up..

Look at the back of the case...the one with the phone jack is your card..
