Is Microsoft going to own the next generation DVD format?

I think Microsoft is going to own the next generation DVD format. And I don’t say that as a Microsoft booster. I think it’s just the route that is going to make the most sense.
When I bought the new Terminator 2 DVD, the second DVD came with the full movie at 1080P (that’s P, not I) which is essentially super-duper High Definition TV. It was all in a collection of .WMV files and it all fit on a single DVD.
Moreover, with a computer with a DVD drive, I could watch this DVD on any screen – regular TV or the various other HDTV standards. It would just scale to whather and do so pretty seamlessly.
What I predict is that you’ll see new DVDs come with support for WMV files. Think about it, one DVD holding a 1080P (1080 lines of resolution) movie. Right now, most DVDs get filled up with a single 480P movie because they are so poorly compressed.
So Microsoft will end up owning the next generation format. This is a market Apple could have owned.

| Blu-ray, NOT Microsoft, is where the HiDef DVDs are going. Check these out: Link (a site with some specs and info), Link (an article about the April 2003 release of a Blu-ray Recorder), Link (a PDF document), Link (a review of a Sony Blu-ray Recorder), Link (Blu-ray devoted site). There's more out there especially when you go to Sony, Philips, etc's websites. |
Thank God. I think we can all breath a sigh of relief.

Agreed. There are more contenders. The fact that Sony and Philips are behind it makes it very viable that they will get enough market support. Microsoft's effortrs to enter that market will fail. But at the same time they have ATI and NVIDIA support for their WindowsMedia version on the PC. Maybe they hope that Corona will be their ticket to bring the format to the consumer good market. The next question is if MS will get enough content?

You don't think. You follow what you think is true. You never check facts. And when someone does (like dendillon) you continue your Holy Silly Quest against MS. If you want to bash Microsoft then do so in the flame wars you started in your own threads.

Sure, microsoft has flaws. you, me and everyone else has flaws. anything ran by people is flawed too, that incudes even Holy Apple company ( holy, according to some of fastics(sp). Even worse, LINUX is flawed too!
In short, everything is flawed, but someone that complains and vent a lot of the hot air about tiny flaws in anything has a very, very large flaw indeed.

| This is not hi-jacking. We are discussing Microsoft and DVD technology here. Right on topic. You seem to have the habbit of attacking people too quickly lately. Did you ever apologize to Zodiaq~ for what you did to him? |
No. Wrong. We are discussing that. You are only here to bash MS.
