There's nothing wrong with tweaking your skins to your personal tastes (so long as they remain on your own machine), but often giving opinions on potential changes an author could make will get anything missing added at some point. It doesn't hurt to ask.

For example, I purchased the Carbonix suite. I then edited the Carbonix graphics and buttons so the minimise was back on the right instead of the left, and I even made sure the corner background "grows and shrinks" depending on how many buttons are on the window. I do this by copying the existing buttons in SkinStudio and tweaking the locations and display attributes.
Other than that, I don't tend to add things. I can cut and paste a few graphics but nothing too complicated. For instance, I had a go at adding shellstyles to the BlueCurve skin, but it all just got too hard

Sometimes I'll tweak the font settings either to make it bigger or remove shadow / outline effects so that its easier on my eyes
