MS W10 October Update

Some cautions and content.

Wednesday, October 3, 2018 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Personal Computing

I've been reading about this upcoming October update to W10. It won't be especially huge, just the same, 10 or so Gigs might give someone a problem of an incomplete download.

This is a very useful tool for the upcoming W10 October update. You may need this if the above occurs: Windows will not tell you this is happening and Windows might get borked. (https://download.cnet.com/blog/download-blog/microsoft-warns-windows-10-users-to-free-up-storage-space-for-the-big-october-update/?tag=nl.e785&s_cid=e785&ttag=e785&ftag=TRE410dd70).

Make sure you know how to reinstall Windows, and make a disk image BEFORE the update on an external storage device. Use Acronis to clone your disc, and clone your disc before any big update.

Doing this also mitigates any ransomware infection.

This link also will allow you to download the October update early, although I really wouldn't advise doing so.

MS will start rolling out the update on October 9th.

So what will be in the update How to Geek gives a summary here: https://www.howtogeek.com/353165/whats-new-in-windows-10s-redstone-5-update-available-fall-2018/

I just got the patch today.

October 9, 2018—KB4464330 (OS Build 17763.55)

Improvements and fixes

This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:
•Addresses an issue where an incorrect timing calculation may prematurely delete user profiles on devices subject to the "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of day” group policy.
•Security updates to Windows Kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Scripting Engine, Internet Explorer, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Linux, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows MSXML, the Microsoft JET Database Engine, Windows Peripherals, Microsoft Edge, Windows Media Player, and Internet Explorer.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

I read that they patched the October update and are re releasing it.

I'm still going to wait a while before I look at updating, which I will do manually because I'll not activate auto updates again, not after this MS cock-up and my last debacle with programs being uninstalled/made inactive.

I don't update anymore and on one computer I don't keep the files in the computer.

I don't keep important files on my PC, either, and what is on my PC is backed up to external drives that are turned on only as needed.  All my most important files are stored on external drives that again are turned on as required, thus keeping them safe from MS cock-ups.

You might say I live in a world of my own.

Yeah, me too.  I don't get out much these days, and don't get to socialise a lot, so I spend a fair bit of time in my man cave on the computer, talking to other kooks and nut-jobs on WC.

I got one. When I updated to v1809 everything went smooth, then yesterday there was a new patch. I restarted and got a black screen. I had to login twice to get to the desktop.

I recommend reading this article - the October Update has been re-released to insiders.

Did you log in as a Standard (Non-Admin) user or an Admin user?  I had been experiencing that occasionally after updates.  After trying a couple of different things, I think I may be avoiding it by logging in as an Admin user immediately after an update (I normally log in as Standard).  It's a little tough to tell for sure, other than I haven't been experiencing the issue for several months now after doing that.

I do not have any problems with Windows 10 1809.  It installed itself last night.  Edge is not having any issues here.  Windows drag no longer malfunctions and the min/max close buttons are all working in WindowBlinds.

Sorry I do not have any MS FUD feed for anyone.

All these years I could never get Deskscapes to work. It does load and work as it should but if I decide to turn it off or add a static wallpaper the screen goes black and I have to restart the computer.

This is what I use to run my 1000's of dreams ..

I can switch back and forth from dream to wallpaper and back again with no blackout or restart.

on Windows 10 v1803 right now , will be updating to 1809 soon and report back then .

I had the problem that is described here , The missing files all came back after a second quick reboot of the system.

as directed by Microsoft website. If this doesn't work they also said if you go to user folder and click on the user name the files would be there in the individual folders for that user.
