Meh, sounds to me like just another case of the wrong person in a job.  Nothing new there, unfortunately.

See, this is the thing.  MS has got people by the short n' curlies with Win 10 and is treating users with the utmost disdain and disrespect because it thinks it can, believing it has the only universally viable OS on the planet.  And sadly, given the limitations of Linux, the walled garden ecology of Apple's O-SX and the fact just about everything runs on Windows, that's rather close to the truth.

The question is, are these files being deleted or has MS taken it upon itself to move these files to the 'cloud'?  And if they are being deleted, why?  Is it because MS has flagged politically incorrect, anti-social key words or phrases?   Or because it detected 'illegal' downloads, and as self-appointed downloads police, took it upon itself to delete the entire folder to be sure all illicit content is gone?

In any event, if any of this is true, and it could well be, MS has long overstepped the mark and become a tech bully resembling a totalitarian state with a ruthless dictator at its head.  It is not MS's place to be a service provider and a policeman at the same time.

I had high hopes for MS and Windows when Satya Nadella took over as CEO, but those were dashed when MS became more secretive, heavy-handed and started forcing Win 10 down unwilling users throats.  Like yeah, just when we thought Apple was bad, MS went one or three better and out-Appled Apple.

I was among the insiders whose complete profiles where emptied after the 1809 update. I reported that, that was about 6 weeks ago... Now I wonder how 'efficient' the insider program really is.

Is 1809 the fast ring? Because mine says 1804 and I still have all my stuff.

Edit: To find which updates you got. Go to settings > Update and security > view update history.

Yeah, I've sometimes had that thought..... but then, I've met other people suffering with psychosis who express themselves somewhat poetically.

I feel like I been upstaged.   

the stated rationale for 2 versions a year is that windows should be more modular so that they can improve components easily without huge changes with massive gaps (95->98->xp->7> etc)

the enforced upgrade is somewhat understandable though not necessarily desirable because it'll be easier to maintain fewer versions and places most users (ie the ones who just use the stuff) in the most secure environment.

Thanks for passing that along.  It doesn't change my opinion though.  Way too much thrashing about on my machine twice a year, for what I perceive to be very little real benefit (as opposed to the occasional Service Pack release method.)  It seems like they're creating a lot of work, everywhere, needlessly.

Yup, way more work than is necessary.  And the fact that they are forced updates that can break users machines is another kind of cyber bullying.  Given the number of people experiencing issues after updates, I'm sure there are millions who fear updates day.

I was one of the lucky one's. Mine upgraded without any problems. Now I'm kinda curious of how their going to fix the patch for those who already have it. 

I'm more interested in how they are going to restore the lost files/work/etc .... and survive the possible class action suit.

Unfortunately their EULA seems to protect them from a class action suit due to lost data. Which is a pity, as I would like to watch them get sued to see if this forced updates every 6 months without proper QA testing madness stops.

If someone has lost data, they are probably sh*t out of luck, as the data seems to be deleted pretty early in the update process and a lot of data is shuffled around after that. I've read that this is particularly worse for SSD users, because, unlike hard disks, SSDs seem to blank out (Trim) the cells where the data was stored once the files are deleted.

I'm so happy my current PC runs Windows 8.

bear in mind how linux distros have similar upgrade patterns. of course, they are different in that it's not forced and they tell you upfront that if it's working, you don't need to bother changing.

or how chrome os is updated every month, though that's a lot less complex with less hardware variations.

just being curious.. did you mess about with group editor? wondering if anyone not tweaking stuff got hit by the profile delete issue. because that'll tell you how many ordinary users will be hit and how big a problem ms has.

I read that they patched the October update and are re releasing it.

I don't update anymore and on one computer I don't keep the files in the computer.

You might say I live in a world of my own.
