Spend all of your conscious effort in methods of preventing forced updates.

You can stop MS making use of your bandwidth with 'Win10 Spy Disabler'  I use it and have disabled so much MS crap looking into my affairs, etc, using my internet.  There are other tools that do it as well, all are found over at majorgeeks.

For those who want something sick and quimple and don't feel comfortable performing registry edits, here's a portable app that's dedicated to just the one thing: preventing forced updates StopWinUpdates.

There's a bit to read below the download buttons.  I recommend downloaders take the time to read the notes by the majorgeeks staff.... especially about restarting the machine after applying changes.

Hopefully this little app will save the need to spend all your conscious efforts in methods preventing forced updates.

I downloaded it and it just gets rid of Windows updates all together .

Not sure if that's all together good .

But as you say you can turn it off and on as you feel like it .

Just remember where you downloaded the app. to find it again as I don't

see it listed in another place to find it or to delete it .

So turn it ON for 1809 or Not is the question.

and BTW still get a black screen from time to time after many so called fixes that don't work so far.

Yes, there are options to turn updates off and on again, but I think the idea is to stop forced updates that could bork your machine.  At least this way you can wait for updates to be refined and thus safer to use.  Alternatively, you can go into settings at any time to check for important updates and patches.

It would usually go to your downloads folder, but what I usually do with portable apps is move their folder to Program Files for safe keeping...  then I create a desktop shortcut of the app to put in Fences.

Right now I would wait to download and install 1809.  There are various reports of it messing with users PCs, so I'm going to wait until it is proved to be safe to use.

Also, sorry to see that your blank screen issue persists after trying various fixes.  Hopefully a remedy to your issue is found very soon.

So, the Windows upgrade seems to be deleting user data for some users (basically because MS fired most of their QA department to save some bucks while at the same time enforcing major updates twice a year that are beta tested by normal users), and Apple's New Proprietary Software Locks kill independent repair on new MacBook Pros. It totally locks down the system if an unauthorized repair is even attempted.

I have NEVER seen such a blatant disrespect for consumers as I am seeing now from these two companies. Unbelievable!

Glad I recommended holding off on the update. MS has removed the October Update in the meantime.

The mind blowing thing is that several Windows Insiders had already WARNED Microsoft that the upcoming build was deleting data. Microsoft doesn't even listen to their own beta testers - not even on such a critical issue as data loss!!!!

One has to wonder if they've all gone insane down at Redmond.

So what do you do if you already updated it? I haven't had any problems, it's running quite smoothly.

However, the biggest problem has been with the deletion of user files located in the C:/Users/[username]/Documents/ folder.

Same here. Updated without issues other than some windows 10 windows close button not working with WindowBlinds running. A known issue that will be fixed in a WB update.

Obviously it's not going to affect everyone....however if you're it.... you're screwed.

So...

ONLY OPTION is NOT to do the update unless you KNOW you have any data backed up to a SECURE location [and that doesn't mean a cloud].

From what I read, things are being deleted for all Library folders ie: Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos and Pictures folders. But it's not happening to everyone. Luckily I still have all my folders intact.

That's the part that I just don't get.  I have no idea what rational could be behind that, even if they all came out flawlessly.  It seems rather pointless really, kind of like constantly re-arranging the office furniture.

Microsoft is always going after the latest fabs (bling bling) and these days that happens to be RAD (Rapid Application Development). Except the person who coined the term already explained that this is NOT what he meant by it (not to mention that applying RAD to an extremely complex OS - one which millions of people worldwide depend upon - is also completely insane, especially after firing your whole QA department).

Must be something in the water. The whole world is going nuts.
