So anyone else have St. Anger?

Had it since yesterday and really haven't given it a good listen; especially on my REAL setup.

Some tracks I'm feelin and others not. Thoughts?

Yes how did you know? Those guys made the best music and I was devastated by the split.I am also an avid Menudu listner and enjoy the latin sound of Rikki Martian You Ayatolla of smoke a bowla you.

Hey! Lars has dragged them all a long way to become the RIAA's lapdog. Maybe they should spend more time going back to what they were and avoiding being part of the constantly changing trend to doing something they like more...

Kirk on why there were no solos:


METALLICA's Kirk Hammett recently explained to Holland's Rockezine.net why there are no guitar solos on the band's new album, "St. Anger". "The reason for that is because again we wanted to move together all four of us in the same musical direction," he said. "We also wanted to preserve the sound of the album. When we tried to put overdubs on the album and put guitar solos on the album it kind of…it sounded like an afterthought, you know? Like something was put on after we created it. It stood out. We wanted to preserve the sound of all four of us in a room just jamming. Spontaneously together. To put production stuff on top of that just didn't sound right. We tried to put guitar solos on, but we kept on running into this problem. It really sounded like an afterthought." Asked if he's satisfied with how the record came out, Hammett said, "Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm so proud of this album. It freaks me out. I haven't been this proud of an album since 'The Black Album', I must say. I mean, the 'Load' and 'Reload' era for us was such a reaction to our first five albums. We didn't want to do what we had been doing: play fast, over the top and aggressive. If anything, the 'Load' and 'Reload' era was a big experiment in hard rock. We needed to do these two albums for us to make 'St. Anger'. If we would have made 'St. Anger' in the mid-nineties, it wouldn't have been fresh and as exciting for us as it was now. It would have felt like doing the same old thing. We needed to balance it out. When we finally got around playing fast and aggressive again, it sounded fresh. You need to get to point A to be able to make point B sound better, you know?"

I picked the CD up the day it came out for $13 and factoring in the DVD and the downloads, it was well worth it. Bob Rock (their producer) played all of the bass tracks on the CD, and he even did a few live gigs with them prior to Robert joining the lineup. The more I listen to it the more this is becoming one of my favorite Metallica works yet.

I absolutely love the raw, garage sound that this has. It actually reminds me of Garage Days Revisited (the original) quite a bit. Also, after watching the DVD a few times I think that the rhythm section of Lars and Robert has a much more apparent chemistry than was the case with Jason.

I, for one, am glad there's no solo's. Kirk Hammet is too much of a widdley fretwanker.
He only pulls truly good stuff out of the bag on the more longer epic songs, like One, Unforgiven and Fade to Black.
The low point of a Metallica gig is when Hamster-boy inveitably does his solo spot. Only picked up when Jason joined him with his bass for a while.
Not that I'm saying he's crap, not by far, but his solo's are a bit blah, especially when he's doing improv.

I read an article in Guitar Magazine a while back that talked about how Kirk's playing has "matured" a bit from his "hyper string whipping days". I'm all about the no-solo thing right now. Makes it much easier for me to learn the whole tune in one shot

I bought the CD for about $10 at Target. A DVD and live recording to download makes it a great deal. Finally a CD that gives me more for my money.

Besides the lack of guitar solos in this album, there is also a definite lack of
that "growl" that Hetfield used to make all the time. (not like that is a bad
thing, but it is different).
