The page cannot be displayed....
Tuesday, June 3, 2003 by White_Moth | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
I am using Windows ME.
I am on Dial-up.
I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 / SP1
I am a Wincustomize subscriber level 4 user.
I use Wincustomize Skin Browser 1.10 and the latest version of SDC.
I know I need to upgrade to XP and DSL.
Two weeks ago a problem started whenever I came to Wincustomize and tried to access a web page. I would get the first Wincust page, but when I clicked another link such as Wallpaper or Windowblinds or others, I get "The page cannot be displayed".
When I hit the address "Go" button, the page would load.
Now a week later, I have to hit the "Go" button two and three times before the page will load, and sometimes that will not help.
This problem occurs using both SDC and SB, IE, and Crazy Browser.
I had been successfuly using the free versions of Zone Alarm and AVG when the problem started two weeks ago, but I un-installed those and am using a "suggested" Firewall and a new Anti-Virus and am still getting the same problem of "The page cannot be displayed".
Sometimes this problem will extend into Discussions using the Skin Browser on larger threads. This tells me that it may be a "timing out" event, but how do I know?
I do not have this problem on other Web sites.
It just happens that I am a subscriber at this site.
I have even re-installed my IE, but to no avail.
I am at my wits end with this, so any help pointing me to a fix would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you

Then there is the 811493 update (I believe, somebody correct me if I'm wrong).
Never happened on another site? Might not be that but it's worth a try uninstalling.

I've been having the exact same thing happen. I don't have the latest Windows Updates, it doesn't matter what browser I use, or whether a popup killer is running or not......... and it's only happening here at WC. It has to be a bug, that hasn't been found yet, because it started after the main server crashed.

hmmm...that's all very odd
I have had no problems on any of the machines at work or on my home machines (that are unfortunately on dial up at the moment).
What time of day are you connecting? Is it possible that the page is timing out? (I see that happen a lot when I use earthlink....they kinda' suck, but that's a whole different topic of conversation....I have earthlink at home due to access numbers, but they real fail on performance....)
Anyway, i have also had problem with Norton messing with IE. I don't know if you run Norton or not, but try disabling it and see if you can connect. I had problems with a bunch of sites until I uninstalled Norton. i reinstall of IE might help, too.
Really at a loss at what could be causing it on this end as the site is really the same as it was before we had the server issue. Maybe T-man has some ideas if he reads this.

And yes, Koasati is correct, it doesn't matter what time of day, (although I do use Earthlink), which has not been a problem,I am at a loss as how to explain or correct it.

I e-mailed T-Man about this a couple of weeks ago but I guess he's still busy fixing stuff.Reply #12 Wednesday, June 4, 2003 6:58 AM
I was just about ready to do an complete HD overhaul, and wasn't looking forward to that.

No-- time of day or night does not matter. Norton's has nothing to do with it. I too have have tried various things, and again it's just this site, and nothing helps. I've tried other browsers. Other avenues. Nada!
Matter of factly I know of someone else who mentioned having horrendous problems as well, and again only with this site. No troubles anywhere else.
I hope it gets fixed soon whatever it is--it's frustrating.

I came here ok, then logged in ok, then went to the message board and couldn't connect. Was logged out and had to log back in, hit 'Cursor XP' in the library, page came up, then went to 'Iconpackager' and it wouldn't come up.
It was basically following that for about 5 minutes then I closed my IE and came back later with it never happening again.

| I've had a problem since the crash too. When posting, after clicking the submit button I get a white page with a 0 on it. |
Hmm, not sure if I seen your email or not....Anyway. This error has been located. It has to do with your security settings. Using something like Norton Internet Security will cause issues with WinCust. We will be doing some recoding in the next couple of days to work around this issue.
As far as the other issues. I am not sure. I myself have been experience problems where the page forevers tried to load. I have been intermitently working on trying to track down the problem. At this time I am not sure what is causing it.
