FBI requests you restart your router

Monday, May 28, 2018 by gmc2 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Read an article that the FBI is requesting that people with routers turn off and turn back on your router. Appears that some Russian hackers have gained access to 500,000 routers worldwide. We did this and I got an error message regarding another computer with the identical IP address. Not sure what this was about but if I interpret the article correctly, my our router may have been impacted???

I'm a little curious. I ran across this article and thought it note worthy to share with the community.

There's no comments or indication that anyone followed up on the FBI's concerns.

Did anyone???

I'm curious as to the point of sharing information if no one is interested.

I saw this article a couple of days ago and just heard it for the first time on the news this morning. Apparently its getting some attention, among other things. What you got.

BTW. Couple of weeks ago my cable shut down, I have Verizon now. Called the tech and they sent someone to check it out. The equipment was fine. The problem was an external one easily corrected. He didn't elaborate on that when I asked. Of course that resulted in a clean install of the necessary whatever on the router. Butt prior to that I tried the reboot to reset it. I called because that didn't work.

There is something VERY fishy about this.

It's all over the national news. First it was a Russian threat and it was said the malware would survive a reboot of the routers, so why advise people to reboot them? Until I read that FBI agents apparently seized a key server used in the attack, which explains why a reboot was necessary.

This means US authorities now control your router, not the Russians. I feel so much better.

The lesser of two evils?

The lesser of two evils?

Eheh. I guess - we can always ask Edward Snowden what he thinks of all of this.

Now seriously, tin foil hats aside, I don't think any of it would have gone public if this really was a sinister plot about two governments fighting for access to our routers.

Now seriously, tin foil hats aside,

I NEVER take off my tinfoil hat, not even in bed.  No siree, I don't wan't government or it's agencies peering into my dreams.  Nope, if they could see just some of what I dream about, it could result in men in black suits turning up on my doorstep.... and we don't want that, DO WE?

Er, what about the: "let's do it in plain sight, right under their collective noses with complete transparency.... then they can't complain when some journalist uncovers our devious plot and exposes it."  It was already public knowledge."

See, that's the thing, the majority of people don't even read articles like this, and if/when they do, they pay little or no attention to them... hence the FBI and etc so-say coming clean.

It's like the poster up in Mulder's office on The X-Files.... "Trust No-one".

FBI must've rung the "IT crowd" or they're fans of the show

I won't quote the parallels here.
