How often do you optimize?

Tuesday, April 29, 2003 by The DJ | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

And what do you use?

I optimize about every 2 weeks and use Executive Software Diskeeper.

I must say it's the best optimizer I've ever used.

Is it a superior optimizer? I would say so.

The defragger built into any OS does not touch the page file or system files does it? ESO will and has a boot time defragger and set and forget.

Try it out if you want and if you're curious.

I use ESO and Norton's. ESO is nice for defragging the page file and MFT but it does only a fair job of defragging. Nortons optimizes the files according to how often they are used. Unfortunately it is ssssssssslllllloooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww. I also use a little program called PageDefrager. It defrags the registry, which neither Norton's nor ESO does. I'm such a geek.

BTW I defrag whenever my disk gets above 5% fragmented or once a week, whichever comes first. Also BTW ESO wrote the Windows defragger. That's why ESO ends up in the Console when you install it. If you want a real headache, just try uninstalling ESO.

I know it puts your boot files first, but the most used is news to me.

I use ASO (Advanced System Optimizer) for defragging my registry.

I've used Raxco's PerfectDisk which claims it is better then ESO and it messed me up. Ever used it?

When things get too "messy" I just clone from my backup hard drive.

I run my defrag once a week. On my laptop I use the normal windows defrag, but at home, because of the kiddos, I use the Diskeeper 7, which works very fine. It has the automation facility ( Set it and Forget It ), and when operating on manual mode, is faster than defrag.

However it seems to me that is only useful for very "busy" computers.

Like Grey, I do it once a week, automated with Norton's Speed Disk. Seems to get the job done fine.

Right now, I'm using Windows Defragger...until I find a good one. Wasted money on the Norton's system (I forget the title had the whole shpeel) and all it did is cause major problems. So Windows Defrag until better comes a long.

I use VCOM's (formerly Ontrack's) SystemSuite, every 2 to 3 weeks. Jet Defrag has Registry, and Boot defrag options. I've been very pleased with all the maintenance tools in SS.

I've tried Diskeeper twice now, once on my old computer, and this morning on my new one............... I've yet to see it do anything. I always get an error message that it's already running, or was installed improperly.
jcg, no problem un-installing it. Could be coz I use Unclean, and not the default add/remove programs........

Once a month... how nice. I have to do it once a week. My computer prefers it that way.

Have DK now and about every 2 wks or so. Used to use norton and swore by it due to its speed but with the last few versions, about the time ME came out, they cut stuff from the suite like a reg cleaning as I recall and it was to the point that the last version I used was as slow if not slower than the built in one of the OS.

DK isnt fast but very very thurogh(sp jafo?) so I like it.
