Microsoft Photos app not working as default app
Wednesday, November 16, 2016 by gevansmd | Discussion: Personal Computing
Earlier yesterday I was using the W10 universal app Microsoft Photos as my default photo viewer, as I always do. A few hours later it was no longer worked. The app is still there but you can no longer run it as the default app as it's no longer even on the list of available choices. Going to the app store app and entering photos, choosing Microsoft Photos produces an error message, "Error, see details". Clicking the button brings up a hexadecimal error code that is essentially useless. Clicking the circle update button, downloads the app, and after trying to install, returns the same error message.
None of the powershell solutions I found online work and MS support couldn't fix the problem either. Apparently there is no way to reinstall an app that should be there. MS must assume there is the program cannot go wrong and doesn't provide a method of reinstalling or repairing it.
I used a restore point and the problem went away last night. When I woke up this morning, after doing nothing else on the PC, the problem returned. Further restores do not fix the problem, even temporarily.
Anyone else run into this and found a solution?

The app is installed, but the default has been lost. Using the app store fails to fix the problem.photos

and where did you try to set default apps? try both places? (settings->default apps..... and control panel -> programs-> default programs -> set default programs)

Mine broke once, but with a different error message. If your Store App works, try launching that and do a search in it for "Microsoft Photos". Once you get to the app page it'll tell you if it thinks the app is already installed. If it thinks it is, you won't be able to download it. If it doesn't see it as installed though, download it and install it.
