"Expert" computer user

Wednesday, March 5, 2003 by Delicious | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I see there are many expert computer users here. Does Expert include the abilities to work inside the machine?

Wonder how many expert computer users are A+ certified.

It's called a tilde. In unix it's sometimes called a twiddle along with a lot of other things.

This is an interesting read:

I'm more interested in finding what a A+ certificate is.

Argh, randomly insert instances of "out" in the above line. Expert computer user does not warrant the ability to type.

So being fluent in typonese is a must trait for an expert computer user?

Sorry but I really have to smile when anyone says they are expert or professional at anything.

I would wager that the person/persons that answered 1: What's a computer? knows more than the ones that answered 4: I am an expert.

I thought the poll meant "within my own household". My wife hates the technical part of computers and my dog can only do basic programming stuff and a little tech/repair stuff....by default, that made me the expert.

the 'expert' is the one everybody complains to when it doesn't work, ie: "I can't login!"

or complains about in said given situation

even when they were just prompted to CHAGE YOUR PASSWORD at the next prompt"
... it won't take my password when I try changing it, what you using? My old one...

One of the VIP's at Ja bil Circuit claimed I had to be the stupidest tech he had evern come across. Seems he still could not get his CD-Drive to function and everytime that I had come by "he was always doing something else at the time" I ended up claiming it worked fine, and it was very obvious it didn't.

So after a team meeting my boss called him up and we both walked over to the building he was located in and asked him to show us what he was doing.

He had a smirk on his face and looked right at me as if say "ha you fool, got you now", reached in his desk and pulled out an old NEC CD caddy, placed a CD in it and then attempted to stuff it into the Creative CD installed in his computer. My boss just gave one hard, short, loud laugh, grabbed my shoulder and pulled me out the door with her. She told me if he ever called tech support again to put him on hold and transfer him to her

guru? expert? no.. but neither ignorant or as stupid as that double Master's holding fool...

I suppose being PC Manager for my Company qualifies me as an 'expert'. Yeah, takes a lot of knowledge to reboot a pc... 99% of all help problems could be sorted by the user with 2 seconds of thought instead of 'my pc won't work, send for help...'

Scenario from three months ago:

Managing Director: My laptop is dead. It just went off while I was working and won't come back on. Do I need a new one?

Me: Looks around, picks up one part of a lead with one hand and another part with the other hand, issues sarcy statement "is this your power lead?". Plugs the two together and leaves MD's office with wry smile...

Sigh, it's soooo nice to be an expert

Fuzzy

I like those CDW commercials " Off to crash the server!, or Hey Bob, you *can* recovery all the emails I just deleted right?, or the managers meeting " Sure we can do that and within a month on a global scale roll out across the WAN, right Bob?"

The older you get, the more your realize that the more you know, the more your become aware of just how much you don't know.

HuronJoe, I have condensed that thought (was my tag line in high school): The more you know, the more you know what you don't know.

I rated myself a #3. I do tech support, have installed lots of stuff, tested lots of stuff, learned to change computer components, and have worked for Stardock for almost 8 years. However, I also work with people who could reverse engineer Windows in their sleep if they wanted to. So, I figure they are an "expert", so there is no way that I fit in the same category.

Crae, I don't know if anyone answered, but A+ certification is basically a base certification that a lot of people get to get entry level tech positions. You can get it instead of a 2 year degree, and a lot of employers accept it. Makes a lot of basement computer geeks "legitimate" in the business world.
