100mb download limit?

Tuesday, February 25, 2003 by Josh Feldman | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

So I have a slight problem. I have just been presented with a screen that tells me I can no longer download until I "support" wincustomize. Now let me get this straight, we supply all of our work to them for FREE and they use it at their discretion, and now they are capping my download limit forcing me to pay. I could easily get a new acount, but that would be cheating. I think that I and others should not have to pay for this service after a time span, since we are the people supplying some of the work. Now I am not making an argument or complaining, I simply would like someone to explain this to me, or help me with this problem....

I have raised your access based on your contributions to the site.

Josh,

I understand that you may be a little bit confused, but here is what's happening. People submit their artwork for others to enjoy. WinCustomize does not own the work you submitted, they only provided a place for you to actually put them up. Now, whether you have your own place or not, I do not know. The advantage of you submitting your work here is that many people see them, and you develop your own sense of status within the community.

WinCustomize, if you haven't noticed, is an ad-free site. All the things WinCustomize are using are extremely costly, meaning we let you put things up at Stardock's expense, Stardock's contribution to rival yours. With over one million users using this website, support doesn't come easy. WinCustomize itself is asking for members to help sponsor something they contributed to.

The works and designs on here aren't going to pay for the bandwidth. There is nothing wrong with asking members to pay a little bit for a service as large as this one.

Frogboy has already promoted you to apprentice, meaning you now can download more things. However, we need to find some way to put a cap on the people who sign up just to download. They're taking without giving, and now you're promoted for your efforts of contribution.

As Elfie said it so well, this site cost a lot of moeny to run (over 10 thousand dollars a month, I believe). So users are asked to contribute to the site after a certain download limit has been reached. Since the average skin is about 400 to 500k, 100 megs is a lot of skins (average about 200 skins).
The ways to contribute to the site is either financial, or valuable artistic contributions. In your case, you've been promoted to Apprentice (giving you unlimited access) because of your artistic contribution. As a general rule, no, people who have made a significant contribution to the site will not be asked to pay anything, as we try to promote them to Apprentice. The problem is that it's not an automated process, so we have to promote manually, and we can't get everybody unless it's brought to our attention.

I would just like to thank you all for all of your positive feedback and information, and especially Frogboy for my promotion. I really appreciate it. I know understand how wincustomize works. See, I thought it was a sponsered site, but now I understand that it comes out of your pockets. Thank you again and I will continue to upload. P.S. I have been working on a complete Mac OS X icon set. I will upload the .png's into the objectdock section, the .ico's into the graphics section, and I may make an icon packager theme. So look for it....take care.

Yes, @shu, you have unlimited access since you're an apprentice.

Thank you paxx, I didn't know that.

@shu wonders though, if that is useful for a guy who only uploads and posts and very rarely downloads???

GFXWizard: show us what your nickname is about. IE: make cool skins/wallpapers and upload them. And even if you do, don't expect to get promoted instantaneously. As I've said before, your contribution has to be significant.
Also, somebody can get promoted just for being a chatterbox in the message board, here.

Thanks Guppy, but I think it has more to do with professional jealousy,
There are some exceptions to the rule tho...
There is adni18, BoXXi, dear old Jim, and of course A_67...
There are a few more, I'll fill in the blanks later...
And I gotta say, all the artists are downright amazing!!!

I don't need to be promoted for the unlimited downloads and such... because I bought Object Desktop, and the skin browser... and lot's of other stuff... ... but if someone could promote me i'd be very happy he he he...
