4k resolution screens
Sunday, January 4, 2015 by djliamdj | Discussion: Skinning
I just sent this to Vstyler, but thought maybe it should go to all skinners out there......
***************************
ive just repurchased Windowblinds after a 4 year absence, and then first thing i did was to buy your Polaris skin, awesome by the way.
Ive made a few skins of my own years ago (i was offica-wod on here then) so i know the time and dedication it takes, which i dont have anymore!
Anyway, down to the point.....i have dual 4K resolution screens at 3840x2160..... the title bars and min max close buttons are tiny, the mouse completely covers them. I have used the option in win 8.1 to boost my sizing options up to 200 percent, so text is now readable etc..... but this doesnt fix the title bar size or the buttons on it, very very annoying trying to get the mouse on it.
So, could i maybe suggest to you and the skinning community, that it would be great to see some blinds coming out also with a substyle to suit this?
just my 2 cents
thx bro
Liam

Yeah, I want that 3D, 4K curved 75in screen but its still a touch more than I want to pay. Also would need my 52 in. HD to break to make room for it. Then I could put the 65in 3D plasma in the bedroom.

If you can afford such screens......
-You know you can always contact a skinner and hire him (or her) to create the skin of your dreams

First I don't know of any Skinner that has the ability to even see what a WindowBlind would look like on a 4K screen. Without being able to view a blind in progress on 4K with the screen resolution it has, making a different sub style for it would not even be possible. Saying that it goes way beyond that. Images used when making a WB can be made to different sizes. But these sizes are limited. You can't just make a graphic that for example is say 224x30 pixels in size and make it who knows how big so the buttons would show. Well, maybe you can but how does one check to see what it looks like on 4K.
I have a suggestion and i'm not trying to be a smart ass with it. How are the Min, max, etc. buttons showing using IE, Chrome, FF for example? I would think they would have the same problem. You said you have made skins in the past but no time now. I'm sure you could find at least some time to just mess with different size title-bar buttons to see what the final look is. I really don't think it's a graphic size problem but a resolution problem, but again not sure.
Bottom line here is a Skinner can't even try to see if a new sub could be made for 4K resolutions. you can as you are using 4K. Doubt very much if you will find people using computers that have the ability to view what they are doing on a 4K screen.
If you are able to find this person, maybe work something out to pay them for their services. Sounds like the main problem is text size and titlebar buttons. Start with that first to see what can be done, if anything.

@ Dave you do have the chance if you have an expansive Graphics card that supports 4K
Nvidia for example has options for it in the nvidia system settings called DSR- Dynamic Super Resolution
It does let you pick a much higher resolution and will scale it down to your native resolution (in games and for your desktop)
I have such a card therefore i know of it, still i think it would be better for djliamdj to open a support ticket and ask if they will consider implementating it.
There are more users than just him that will face these issues and won#t be able to use the skins.
And that is not mainly their fault well to a certain degree because they buy these products but thinking about some other posts done before this one there was a guy with a Lenovo Laptop that also had a 4K screen that asked for larger buttons aswell.
And im certain that future Products will also have better displays to come, so it would be only logic that Stardock implements something like this and spares the skinner the trouble to fiddle around and potentially harm their hardware for sales of the product since it needs to be done anyway sooner or later with raising resolutions.

I didn't know that but of course there is a lot I don't know. Was just saying the thoughts I what I could do on my end I guess. Would still like to know what happens with the size of the buttons using Browsers as of right now or a standard windows skin. All I know for sure is if you use the highest setting your screen can handle and than check lower resolution the button and everything in a skin gets larger. Use a low resolution on the monitor and the buttons are very big.
Think I will be quite now and see if anything comes up I can learn from.

OK i made a view screenshots to demonstrate
This is the simulation of "4K"
without windowblinds, the first window on the left monitors will allow you to adjust the window size text buttons and so on- to kjeep it short it will affect everything just not the parts seperately.
Using that slider will also work with windowblinds since windowblinds uses the values that are defined by windows.
However how i understood the OP did not want to change the windowframes aswell only text and button size and this cant be done without affecting the other parts through windows given settings.
PS : This seems like a good time to show the problem iam having over 3 months now ( look at chrome windows default skin handles it perfectly
Now look at the next screenshot its quite hilarious.
Same setting only windowblinds active this time buttons have a good size and are very easy to click on if the slider is set to big like i said
Chrome with windowblinds notice the gap on each side of my chrome this has nothing to do with the resolution or the skin![]()
Here is a taste of 4K with the slider set to small.
On a 30" monitor it is already hard to click those buttons now imagine this resolution on 15" screen

With luck in 2 years, when 4K is truly supported and a little more widely spread, currently it would serve only those who are wealthy enough to afford a 4K screen, while there is almost no content streamed or released for it unless you take upcomming bluray releases into account and the Superbowl,
Worldchampionships.
A good example dual or tripple (tri) screen setups are out for many years take a look into the wallpaper section how often do you spot one?
SO rather than asking the skinners to fullfill your wish you go and take the next logic step, one that would benefit everyone, that would be opening a support ticket and ask Stardock to implement a scale button for 4-6K users.
