My PC sucks, how about you?

Saturday, December 14, 2002 by WolfwoodX | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I have been running my system to its limits for 3 years; Winamp3, Photoshop7, Flash MX, Object Desktop, Swish v2, WMP 9, all of the other resorce hungray apps, I've been pushing it with a:

- Celeron 600 overclocked to 900
- 256Mb sdram
- 133 fsb mainboard with 2pci slots no agp (gag)
- 20gig 7500rpm HDD (runs windows)
- 4gig 5500rpm HDD (runs linux)
- 8mb SiS video card (ouch)
- 17" Korea Data Systems Monitor (pos)
- Labtec speakers
- 10x4x32 HP 9300 CD-RW
- Zip100 parallel external (pos)
- Windows 2000 Pro
- RedHat 8

Try and top that..

I think we should all be prepared for Doom 3. I have a feeling a lot of people's computers are going to suddenly suck.

I bought my 1.8 gig when the 2.2 was coming out, and now there is a 3 gig. No biggy, because the minimum requirements for software hasn't kept up, but I have a feeling there is a fleet of products being produced now that are gonna require >1 gig processors.

The two things I am most often annoyed by are my video card and ram. I got a matrox g450 because of the 2d quality and dual monitor support, but the game play isn't what I would like. It is also hard to find motherboards around here that except more than a gig of ram. At this point I think any of us who create at non-commercially printable resolutions are doing ourselves a disservice. Takes a lot of ram, though.

In the next 6 months I figure I'll be shifting this one to the living room and building another. Now all I have to do is plan what liquor stores I'm gonna knock over.

Top that, ti220?
Easy:

Pentium MMX 200mhz overclocked to 233
32M RAM
TX Pro/2 motherboard (So old it's an AT board)
2Meg Matrox Mystique gfx card.
Awe 32 SoundBlaster sound card. (The original Awe 32, with the 2 meg memory upgrade)
Running Win 2K.

Only notable bits of my setup are my USB hub, optical mouse and my monitor which is only a few months old. Evrything else is crap.

Trust me, your impression that your specs suck is quite misguided.
Try running Photoshop on my setup, and watch it take about 30 seconds just to select and area with the marquee tool....

Keep running it at the o/c spec and it won't suck, it will probably blow!

heh, if we are talking sucks, I have a timez/sinclair here in a drawer...

my laptop:

p90 IBM thinkpad
48megs of ram
2 meg video, 256 colors
800 meg hard drive.

I use the lappy for ebooks and as a stereo in my bedroom.

I use a 200mgz IBM pizzabox for a file/web server here at the house, and it faithfully handles access from 2 or 3 machines at once for mp3s, ebooks, etc. DOn't toss those old machines, put them to work for you.

Then:
CPU 486 100mhz DX4
RAM: 4 meg
HD 1.2 gig
GFX: blah..
CD: 2x speed
SOUND: SB 16 (best ever made)

Top of the range back in 94 when I bought it. Set me back around $2000....

Now:
CPU: Athlon XP 1600+
RAM: 512 mg
HD: 8.4 and 30 gig (almost filled up) :/

Upgraded to this config a years ago (not from the 486 though). Set me back $1000....

Just threw out a 386 sx and a 486 66 and a 486 dx2 100.
I was given a pair of P100 boards and CPUs so an upgrade of the bookends was in order...

90% of my 217 uploads to this site were made on my old PC. It was a PII 233Mhz, 64Mb ram, 4Mb videocard, and 3Gb hard drive with a 14" monitor. I thought it was great for a long time, I even made a few 1600x1200 wallpapers on that!

A couple of months ago, I finally got a top of the range Dell system with a huge monitor and I LOVE it! I gave the old one to my father in law, and when I was round there last week, I took a look at it, and I couldn't believe I used to create anything on it, it looked so small and weedy.

BoXXi licks his big monitor.............. (As Jark would say)
