I bought my 1.8 gig when the 2.2 was coming out, and now there is a 3 gig. No biggy, because the minimum requirements for software hasn't kept up, but I have a feeling there is a fleet of products being produced now that are gonna require >1 gig processors.
The two things I am most often annoyed by are my video card and ram. I got a matrox g450 because of the 2d quality and dual monitor support, but the game play isn't what I would like. It is also hard to find motherboards around here that except more than a gig of ram. At this point I think any of us who create at non-commercially printable resolutions are doing ourselves a disservice. Takes a lot of ram, though.
In the next 6 months I figure I'll be shifting this one to the living room and building another. Now all I have to do is plan what liquor stores I'm gonna knock over.

Easy:
Pentium MMX 200mhz overclocked to 233
32M RAM
TX Pro/2 motherboard (So old it's an AT board)
2Meg Matrox Mystique gfx card.
Awe 32 SoundBlaster sound card. (The original Awe 32, with the 2 meg memory upgrade)
Running Win 2K.
Only notable bits of my setup are my USB hub, optical mouse and my monitor which is only a few months old. Evrything else is crap.
Trust me, your impression that your specs suck is quite misguided.
Try running Photoshop on my setup, and watch it take about 30 seconds just to select and area with the marquee tool....

my laptop:
p90 IBM thinkpad
48megs of ram
2 meg video, 256 colors
800 meg hard drive.
I use the lappy for ebooks and as a stereo in my bedroom.
I use a 200mgz IBM pizzabox for a file/web server here at the house, and it faithfully handles access from 2 or 3 machines at once for mp3s, ebooks, etc. DOn't toss those old machines, put them to work for you.

A couple of months ago, I finally got a top of the range Dell system with a huge monitor and I LOVE it! I gave the old one to my father in law, and when I was round there last week, I took a look at it, and I couldn't believe I used to create anything on it, it looked so small and weedy.
BoXXi licks his big monitor..............
(As Jark would say)
