Windows 9 Is Coming. What Do You Want to See?

Thursday, August 21, 2014 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing

We are going to start to see the Windows 9 preview fairly soon according to various reports.

Link: http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-expected-to-announce-windows-9-on-september-30

We've heard the rumors of supposed features and user interface changes, so we can only wait and see what really to expect in Windows 9.

The real question is, what do you want to see changed or added in Windows 9?

I'd like to see a real OS... not something that looks like it was built to cater to tablets, etc installed on a desktop.

I'm just going to "This." this. Win 8 tablet is pretty ok on my surface 2, but it has dick-all to do with a desktop computer in my opinion.

And from a desktop OS I want the same things I always want: speed, compatibility, ease of use. More specifically I'd like to see the next directX.

The capability to boot to whatever screen you want, i.e. desktop on your computer without having to switch to it on each boot and a normal Start Menu.  I believe I saw these as being included with Windows 9.

Lighter on resources than Windows 7.

As long as Stardock is around so I can make it look like Windows 7, or real close, I could care less what they do with Windows 9. If Stardock cannot undo/modify what Microsoft stupidly creates, then skinning is doomed and I would not want to have anything to do with it.

You can already do this in W8...

I would like better voice control built into every aspect.  I love how Google has integrated voice into all the important tasks for me on my Samsung S4, and it works great.  I'd love to easily use my voice on my desktop.  It works now, but is very clunky and many times gets what I say wrong.

I don't care what's "under the hood", as long as it's stable.

Just give me the Windows XP or Win 7 GUI.

The Start Menu with the Metro tiles on the side is ugly.  Why not have the tile menu function the way the desktop functions in Windows 8, just the other direction?  That is, it's a program available from the desktop Start Menu that gets you into the tile mode.

By the way, my wife's new HP notebook boots directly to the desktop.  It's our only Win 8 machine and I have not yet installed the Object Desktop 8 tools so I wonder how HP is accomplishing that.  Is that registry setting?

I'm still using Windows 7 but I thought MS dropped putting the Start Menu in it's last update to Windows 8 and I was under the impression that Windows 8 still default booted to the Modern/Metro screen and you could then switch to the Desktop.

I think update 8.1 or one of those did at least add the button back in, but I think it just takes you to the Start screen.
