/me needs a guru.....

Wednesday, December 4, 2002 by BoXXi | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

As some of you may know, since I got my broadband connection I have been having trouble with my uploads to this site getting corrupted in the transfer from my computer to the Wincustomize server. Now, the strange thing is, I can send files by e-mail, or by messenger, and everything is fine. I need to talk to someone who knows broadband inside out to try and cure this as it's really becoming annoying.

Is there a website or forum where these guys hang out? Does anyone know a broadband expert who could help me? Are any of you experts in this field?

My ISP (NTLworld) have been no help at all, they said it was my fault for trying to upload big files!!! (I don't consider 128k to be a big file, do you?) and they said it's not a fault at their end, so they are not interested. I need to know if there are some settings I can adjust in my Network connection (bearing in mind that I have tried many things already with the assistance of T-Man, who has been a great help) or if its something to do with my network card or my digital set top box modem, or anything really!

I really need some help with this, pleeeeeeeze. So if any of you guys have any ideas, I will try anything!
Thank you............Bryan (BoXXi).

Bryan:While I must admit you are right about the Tech Support option. When you have no where eles to turn It may be worth a shot.Sometimes when I get a tech I do not like I will polietly hang up and call back straight away to get another person,,and sometimes they are so nice and knowledgeable and fix my problem. And sometimes not. When I hear you say T-Man is stumped Your really getting out of me depths.I did look at your numbers from DSLreports,,They looked ok but ping times where a bit high. The report said your data stream transfer was good too, although I do not know how you got this conclusion looking at your esarlier post about a 5 minute+ 2.9m upload.Pushing large files thru a very small hole very likely will cause corruption. Is the preinstalled firewall in XP turned off?Dang I am so sorry about your problem,,is cable modem an option?Just for a try?Gosh Dang BoXXi I despise DSL!!

QOS Packet Scheduling. If you go into Control Panel Network Connections and right click the connection, choose Properties, Networking, highlight QOS Packet Scheduling and click Uninstall. Reboot and bob's yer uncle as they say. Might not solve the problem but it will speed up your connection.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night but I needed my beauty sleep

Didn't work. Connection not noticably faster either.

cable modem not an option.
Yes Patrick, strange about the upload speed, looked good on the tests, only 12kbs when I uploaded to Wincusto! Odd!

Any more suggestions?

I have to go to work now......will check back later.

OK, now we've tried everything, whatever is left, however unlikely, must be the problem. Despite what NTL say your line is borked. The only way to test that is to attach another pc...

Some day when I get a moment I will try to find a different upload component for our website to see if that could be problem. Maybe there is some sort of incompatability or bug with it.

Fuzzy! Help! Ever since I uninstalled QOS Packet scheduling, my computer is running real slow, and the corruption is worse than ever. Also, IE6 takes a full 2 minutes to start, even before it finds my home page. Can you tell me how to put it back on? I went back in to the settings, but it's not there anymore. Where do I get it from?

EEEEK! My connection is a full 20% faster without it... You can re-install. From memory (I'm at work, W98 only..), go back to the same place then install> service and QOS should be on the list.

This is most strange. Your connection should not be using or need QOS. We have a fully qualified network engineer coming in today to do some work, I will tap him for info (my qualification is NT/Exchange) see if he can shed some light.

Boxxi, please don't take me wrong, but personally at this point I would make a complete backup, strip that sucker down to the bare roots, and rebuild from scratch. Sometimes, it is the only logical choice after all other avenues have been thoroughly explored.

If you never changed the default system restore settings you should be able to go back upto about a week... maybe that before all this started with the cable internet... you could start over like you never installed it in the first place.

Panic over... I did a system restore.

I came across something interesting while I was at dslreports.com, At the top of the page it said."Proxy detected" and next to it was a link to explain what it meant. This is what it said.......
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We detect you are using a PROXY server to access the web! This means all your web requests are diverted through an ISP or company supplied gateway (yours is at 62.252.224.6), which does the job of fetching the page, then providing it to you.

This proxy server maybe a setting in your browser you can change, or may be transparent (invisible to you) and unavoidable.

Some proxy servers can be unreliable especially with dynamic content. Proxy servers may also cache content for faster access.. or may log the sites you visit. On a mainland broadband connection (other than satellite), the web is usually faster, more private, and more reliable, if you are not directed through a proxy or caching server.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I checked my settings, the proxy server box was unchecked. Does this mean it's a transparent one? If I bypass the proxy server is this likely to improve or worsen my situation?

Just wondreing Bryan,,,is anything better? The new upload looks ok on pre-view.Let us know.We want to start an email barrage campain to your ISP.A WinCustomize site wide effort to let them know how important your work is to us.Maybe after betting thousands of emails they will send a very good Tech to your house to get you sorted.Just an idea,,,,but I bet It would work.

Patrick: which new upload do you mean? Are you looking at "The Question"? If so, that one was posted for me by T-Man, like all my recent stuff. I mail them to him and he posts them directly onto the site for me.
I am about to do another test upload after making a few more changes.......here we go again......
