being payed for a design

Tuesday, October 8, 2002 by Styl-X Design | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

would you pay 2 euro/dollar cent (0.02 dollar) for downloading one of these artworks, (that 1 cent goes to the designer, the other 1 cent goes to the owner of www.wincustomize.com)
is there a future in this id? let me know

Good idea in theory, but not practical.

why is that splash? if somebody set up his acount, then he pays 10 dolar, and when he download something he has only 9.98 left
that money goes the the acount of the designer and to the owner of wincustomize. the only problem is the whole script you need to "cash"you money of you acount, this id crossed my mind when i saw that my stuff togheter was downloaded over 10000 times in a week, i can make a good living of it

Oh I see? So you kinda pay as you go, like a mobile phone. You pay say $10 and every time you download something, the moey is taken from this 'account'. Then when you have, say $2 left, you could pay another $10, so you will have $12 in your account. And then you download something... etc etc

Problem is that if people had to pay, you wouldn't get 10,000 downloads. Maybe a hundred or two at the most. :/

That is true! Who would want to pay for something you could do for free on other sites.

yeah, i agree people are going to download less stuff, but this is one of the only sites where people can upload their own stuff, if you make money with your own designs, you can pay your downloads, its a good way to make people design more and better stuff, i should mind to pay 2 cents a download.

I wouldn't mind paying, but I wouldn't as long as I could get them for free somewhere else. You would have to have a lot of exclusive content, and you would have war keeping people from posting them for free everywhere else...

Well, you will get a race and competition to whom gets the most downloads, and you will see a whole lot of lookalikes and derivations of the skins that gets the most downloads, until it gets so boring you lose interest.

Lecrayon...to a degree that is happening already....whether that be 'imitators' or just people themselves producing 'more of the same'....[this time it's blue, not like the 'other' blue, but a little more aqua]...

I agree with you Jafo. But if you can earn something for the initial mass of downloads it might even get worse.

Yeah, agree with that, but the work only becomes better, because people wants to make money and now, there is already a race for the most downloads, thats just nice

About what might be a good price to charge for selling a WB theme to a customer?

I'm talking about a small business that wants to buy a theme using their business colors and logo.

Jobeleca, contact Alexandrie or Treetog. Pixtudio has made a few of those. They may be able to help you.

So you mean you are making the theme for a company? well, then there is only 1 user, and they can do with it whatever they want, and probably you wont get permision to upload it here also, i think a good price is something between 100-200 dollars depends on the time you put in it, and the size of the company (for ex: if its microsoft you can let em pay 10000,-)

I was thinking about licensing it for $100 for 10 computers and $10 per additional computer, does this seem fair to you?

Also, should I use the same pricing scheme for the government? There's an admiral that is interested in one of the themes I am currently working on.

Link it to how long it takes you to make the skin and match that to a reasonable wage - say $15 an hour (you're a skilled skinner, right? Skill is worth paying for). Say it takes you 20 hours. That's $300 right there. Don't sell yourself cheap - more complex skins will take longer and so you should charge accordingly. Skins tend to be sold on a work-for-hire basis where you make the skin and they get the rights to it, so they can make as many copies as they want, but if you think a licensing scheme will work best in your particular situation, go with that. Just be very certain about what you are delivering, when you are delivering it by, who has the rights to the deliverables and (most importantly) when you will get paid.
