Bariatric Surgery Patients? UPDATED
Do you have anything to share?
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 by RedneckDude | Discussion: Community
Hi guys. Just wanted to see if anyone out there has had bariatric surgery and if so, do you have anything you'd like to share?
Helpful tips, things to watch out for, etc.
My wife and I are gearing up for the gastric sleeve surgery. In order to get the insurance company to pay, we both had to lose 10% of our weight, as a show of commitment.
Lisa made her 10% goal today! Yay Lisa!! I weighed in today with the hospital dietitian, I have lost 9 lbs. since last weigh in!
I still lack 11 lbs. But I have greatly reduced the amount of insulin I use and am at a point of having a blood sugar average of 80 - 110 mg/d. I was averaging around 250 - 300 and had an A1C of 11 - 13. I expect an A1C of 8 or less when I see my Dr. mid August.
I have been walking the track at the hospital where Lisa works. Getting from 4 - 6 miles each time I walk. Protien shakes and an 1800 calorie per day diet is going well.
I would greatly appreciate any tips, tricks, recipes, stories, etc. that you may want to share! Wish us luck!

Lifestyle change, not a diet. I'll continue the exercise and eating habits after surgery. For a while, it'll be a liquid diet, then purees. It'll be a bit before I get back on solid food.
We have already been getting protein shakes at GNC, we wanted to find something we like well before it is required.
I have discovered that eating right costs more...lol. And I have trouble getting 1800 calories in in a day, eating the right foods.
Thanks Tom, Doc.
This particular surgery takes out about 2/3 of the stomach, including the part called the fundus, which is the part that secretes ghrelin, the hunger hormone.
Most people, after having the gastric sleeve surgery, don't experience hunger anymore. So, I think I'll do well.
What worries me is the cost of removing the extra skin after weight loss.

Yay, Lisa! Good for you. Keep at it Jim, you'll get there. You already know that the wife and I wish you both all the best and that I am thrilled that you are making progress.

I knew this thread was here but have been waiting to see my neighbor. Just talked to her tonight as she had what you are having. She is a young lady at 41. Had it done about 2 and 1/2 years ago. She was 305 and now 175. I remember when she had it done it was November and didn't see her till around April or May. Didn't even know it was her and thought she had a visitor till she from across the street said Hi Dave. Couldn't believe it. Is is doing very well and never saw her walk so fast as she does now.
wishing you and Lisa all the best and will be thinking about both of you. You can both do it and from what I see from my neighbor you will be much better including your health. Bless you both.

Thanks Dave, good news to hear.
You hear so many stories about the ones that went wrong. I understand it's usually the patient not doing their part.
That won't be me.
Thanks.

My ex had that surgery Jim, and lost a helluva lot of weight. If she eats too much or consumes sugar or anything like Cool Whip, she gets violently ill. So you may have many restrictions after the surgery.
But then again another person I know had it done and gained all his weight back because he ate way more than he should have even after the surgery, like 8-12 small meals a day. Dumb as a rock.
In the end I believe though that weight loss is a mental thing, you either have the will to do it, or you don't.
I know I am overweight myself and could stand to lose some pounds and I try not to eat that much, but then again I cannot exercise due to a back injury.
