Big registrars will move them anyway if there is no response from the previous, but it still is a scary thing. A domain name is an asset. Also, if I had the extra cash I wouldn't do it year-by-year and risk forgeting it. Right now there is an insane fad for lowbrow, bullshit companies to crawl registrar databases and grab all the domains the instant they expire, just so they can and point them at low-end, ad-laden search engines. Worthy of the Capital Punishment? very, very close call...

By the way, if you begin the process of transfering your domain form Verisign to another registrar, they will offer you a $15 renewal for a year (half price) to stay with them. Now, if only they'd offered that in the first place.

I wanted full control of the name and transfer but willing to settle for a yearly rental. I thought of Verisign and others like Thawte or Yahoo but it seemed so expencive compared to others.
It just seems so confusing. I just want to avoid a bad experience or worst loose the domain name when evryon knows the address.

And, just to prove the point, how about this news item I just read: ICANN may pull Verisign's right to sell domain names unless Verisign start keeping more accurate records... ahem! http://news.com.com/2100-1023-956433.html?tag=fd_top

I have all my domains sorted out through them. They charge good low prices, and offer all the extra features you could possibly need. They also have damn good customer support.
