Cost is irrelavent, there are too many ways to make it cheap. What you need to be sure of is that you are *really* getting the domain, not just letting them buy it and lease it to you yearly. Find out if you are gonna be the administrative contact, or them. You should also make sure you can move it to another registrar whenever you want, and what they are gonna charge you to do it. Me, I'd stick with big names, I've seen the horror that is a registrar simply going out of business... You call to get your domain moved and get some sick sounding guy on an answering machine...

Also, if I had the extra cash I wouldn't do it year-by-year and risk forgeting it. Right now there is an insane fad for lowbrow, bullshit companies to crawl registrar databases and grab all the domains the instant they expire, just so they can and point them at low-end, ad-laden search engines. Worthy of the Capital Punishment? very, very close call...

Personally and professionally we stick with Verisign for anything related to domain names. You get full control over it right from the start and if you ever need help for whatever reason you can call them and get a real live person! We've had nothing but positive experiences with them. At last count we had around 50 different domain names with them and no problems.

We have also registered all of our corporate domains through Verisign (formerly Network Solutions). However, I have recently transfered my personal domain, and regsisterd a new one, through InexpensiveDomains. http://www.inexpensivedomains.com They are only $15 per year and are a completely legitimate domain registrar. My motivation was solely cost, but they do have very good administrative tools and far fewer hoops to jump through than Verisign.
By the way, if you begin the process of transfering your domain form Verisign to another registrar, they will offer you a $15 renewal for a year (half price) to stay with them. Now, if only they'd offered that in the first place.

Yahoo offers a domain registration service. I think its cheap but I don't know the actual price.

Has anybody heard of GoDaddy.com? I was reading up on them but I think they have something hidden but I can't find it yet.
I wanted full control of the name and transfer but willing to settle for a yearly rental. I thought of Verisign and others like Thawte or Yahoo but it seemed so expencive compared to others.
It just seems so confusing. I just want to avoid a bad experience or worst loose the domain name when evryon knows the address.

Don't go for Verisign. They're thieves. No reason to charge so much when you can get domain names for $15 or less everywhere else. Besides, we should know by now that if a company is big and established does NOT garrantee they are good nor that they will still be in business tomorrow (Worldcom?).
