Where Is The Community?

Saturday, August 24, 2002 by 1Renegade | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Just a note, sharing an opinion mind you. Where is the community of artists, art-lovers, skinners, etc? As of late, seems everyone has had a chip the size of Texas, sorry Wise Old Man,on their shoulders when it comes to people that have difficulty comprehending what this site is all about. Rather than politely inform "newbies" of how this site works, and pleasantly leave it at that.....all this arguing going on. What REAL purpose does it serve in the end? I can understand the frustration, am familiar with the feeling it was "all about the money" at one point in time, but then I DID subscribe, and I DID purchase OD after purchasing WB. Call me "fat, dumb and happy"! For someone interested in the software, and interested in skinning, and interested in customizing their desktops to read all this bantering would surely have been a big turn off to me, not knowing what I know now about this very creative, informative and sharing community. I would think twice about participating in these "no-win" threads which seem to "lure" fine people to the level of the "shit-disturbers"........

Thanks

The reason I get ticked has more to do with the fact that these folks show up on their soapbox, spew their 'moral outrage' and then we never hear back from them, even when their questions are answered civily (civilly?, whatever) At first, these folks were treated well and their questions were answered by Brad or whomever and the explanations were not condescending and were positive. But they keep showing up saying the same things over and over and over. I wish, for once, that, after a good explanation has been given, the original poster would come back and say something. Oh wait, that's happened before, several times. The whole thing turned into a Stardock bashing, no matter what anybody said.

I vote for a sticky FAQ thread and automatic deletion of any new thread that concerns a question answered on it. The idiots are back again today...

There are some other solutions that I have seen used.

One is to have a gateway page to the message board. The first time a person clicks on the message board link they are shown posting guidelines, community statements, things like that. Regular people just bookmark the message board and bypass the gateway.

It takes a lot of work, and I don't think it could be done here, but we cut repetitive posts like that and paste them together in one thread.

I was just thinking last night that maybe this cap is a new thing. Maybe as more people who came here after the cap was initiated become more predominant, the problem will fade away.

One other thing we tell our members is that if no one answers a thread like that, it quickly sinks down to the bottom of the screen and then vanishes (sometimes conveniently and by design). They only want to make a statement, most of the time, and are not interested in enlightenment.

We have weathered much like this on my site, and I think I am just way tired of the fighting. Therefore, I think I over-react when I find it here. I need to train myself to step back....

It does seem a bit much sometimes when everyone pounces, but I think that that just comes from the fact that people are emotionally invested in this site. A simple three-step process would suffice: have a weekly designated "good cop" point them to a sane, respectful link. If they respond badly, either ignore them or have this week's designated "bad cop" elucidate on the contents of the link ( bstreet does this quite well) .

As a long time Stardock supporter, I would like to see some of the rules that were put into place on the Stardock newsgroups enforced here.

The main reason I have been active in the SD newgroups going on 3 years now, is that everyone (pretty much) is civil to each other. When someone gets out of hand, they are immediately told by a moderator to clean or their language or to refrain from personal attacks.

That doesn't seem to be the case on Wincustomize. I agree with 1Renegade. Albeit that many of the comments that Brad's talks about are valid, some of the regulars here seem to revert back to the standard newsgroup habit of immediate flame, flame, flame.

I think, sometimes, people just have a real need to make a parting shot. And sometimes, when people argue what is a parting shot, it will be defended big time. It is, after all, a statement more of feeling than reason at that point. To argue the parting shot, then, becomes to argue with feelings. No body wins. There is a whole site devoted to parting shots, last statements.... http://www.sothere.com/about.php. It lets people come to terms with things internally, resolve some conflict, move on...

It is hard to say... I admire the way Boza is here contributing now. I wonder, did all the arguments help him make the decision to stay?

C-Rat....we do keep a watchful eye on behaviour here at Wincusto. Specific flaming, personal assault/insult and abusive behaviour is 'stepped on' quite efficiently.
By and large, we are all adults here...[the average MB poster's age is bordering on geriatric], and being a site 'for' the skinners it's reasonably appropriate that they be allowed to speak their mind about things that affect them and their craft, so, now and then things 'appear' somewhat more 'heated'.

99 times out of 100 it's all resolved without too much 'blood-shed'...

This thread has come full circle 3 or 4 times, and the arcs have never once touched! It just spirals merrily on. Someone with authority should specify an approved code of conduct for dealing with the DL cap devils, and related miscreants.
