Starone to Feline (re Menu)

Thursday, August 22, 2002 by starone | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Hey, Feline. Remember the menu issue we were pondering over back on the object bar thread? Well, when the later version of WB came out and I updated to XP, the problem cleared up. However, I have just discovered that werewolf now has the same problem I had at the time. Whenever he tries to open up one of the items on the menu, instead of opening the program it throws him into Object Edit. This is all very strange, huh? Don't know why my problem cleared itself as I didn't do anything to get it to work. Thought this might be of interest to you as we had labored many hours over this. Also kind of hoping that maybe someone else may read this and have a clue that might help werewolf out.

Feline, forget all buttons but these two: Button No. 8 is the Menu smartbutton (ctrl-menu). The other smartbutton is No. 6 which is the url button. Button No. 8 is the 2nd button from the top left. Button No. 6 is the bottom right button on the bottom border.

If you mean the quick launch menu I have the same problem on Win2k. It works fine on XP but on 2k it opens the app in Object Edit. It must have to do with the path for the quick launch links being a WinNT directory instead of a Win directory. I'd guess that the script has the path in it... maybe you can edit the script? I haven't tried fixing it yet, just disabled the smart button on the 2k box...

Yup, that's the little devil (the quick launch menu). Is Stardock support aware of the problem with Win2K I wonder?

Too early in the a.m. I guess as I forgot to thank you for your response DavidK. I beg forgiveness.

By the way, Feline, want to change nicks? Hum, on second thought probably not. Might get too confusing.

Oh yes, Feline, the irc. I'll let werewolf explain it to you. (After all, I'm just a dizzy blonde at the moment. Too early in the a.m. to think logically.)

DavidK, interesting idea.

it is worth noting that when i first started hunting this problem with starone it failed on her win98 machine, but worked on my win98 machine.

so, if a directory with the expected name is created, and links placed into it, the quick launch menu plugin should start working? anyone want to try that experiment?

i am not sure you are right DavidK, since the plugin seems to be correctly finding the quick launch dir.

on my winXP box, this dir is in:
D:\Documents and Settings\Feline\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

i have just added another shortcut to this folder, and when i reload notepad it is picked up by the smart button menu. i had to reload notepad before this change was picked up though.

i was under the impression that windows has a function to return these paths to your program, so they shouldnt be hard coded. as i recall, this folder is in roughly the same place in both win2k and winXP, so if it can be found under one OS, why not the other?

also, i doubt that the abouve path is hard coded, since it wouldnt work on anyone else's machine.

what we could do with is seeing if this works on anyone's win2k machine.

anyone out there able to prove or disprove this?

i have a win2k machine at work, so can check it out there, but wont be back again until tuesday (saturday now). a faster answer would be nice.

that is you at number 5 in the top authors list you know!

how about we just catch up with T-Man instead? if we ask him nicely he has the power to change your nick. how about "starone the pussycat"?

Oops. Sorry feline. Back to the nicks. I like the one you came up with but guess it would mean I would have to start making cat icons. Stars are easier. Guess the grass isn't always greener on the otherside of the fence after all.

you arent thinking like a cat yet, but it will come.

when cats see a fence, they often settle down for a nap right on top of it. this way we can have a paw in both camps

He, he. Well this seems to be a good day for losing it. I'm now having lemon pie and Dr. Pepper for breakfast/lunch. Not bad either, going back for seconds. Hum, think the whole pie may be gone soon. Ought to be good and high by then. Might be able to climb that fence after all.

dont think of it as loosing something, think of it as gaining a whole new you!

a cute adorable furry fun loving you!
actually, once the furry part starts to happen you really do need to join us in the chatroom marathon, since that is where all of us furry and fuzzy ones seem to end up

Well, right now the transition is making my head spin. (Too much pie I think). Don't know if my eyes and brain could handle that many threads.

Wonder where werewolf is today? Maybe he's wisely staying out of this for a while. Beginning to wonder if you two will ever get together.

starone the pussycat - Don't know if my eyes and brain could handle that many threads.

why worry?
do you really think most of the posters in the marathon thread are managing to keep up with most of the sub threads?

after all, we are always getting messages along the lines of "what is going on here, i am confused"

right, i have just tried this on my win2k !!! machine, and it worked!

so, if / when either DavidK or werewolf show up once more, we can start looking more carefully.

we cannot simply say it never works on win2k
