Slipshot...just take your time with it.
You'll find there is a long learning curve in understanding all the 'tricks' but once you have, it's a lot of fun....

Oh, and I've had it running on every version of Windows from 95 onwards...

Keep an eye open for error messages....most 'faults' are to do with paths....making sure everything is in the right place...in the right folder and tree.
Also, because LiteSTEP is one of the oldest shells out there, it has a hell of a lot of 3rd-party modules written for it, and they don't all necessarily work properly [or at all] with the LiteSTEP version that you may have running.
So many ways for a 'shell theme' to fall over....you'd need to post a lot of info for anyone to be certain what your specific problem might be...

OH MY GAWD!!Litestep put a heavy foot on my butt!!Totally crashed me machine!!System Restore for me and things still aint right.I wish I had'nt dun it but it's too late now by looking at all that registry funk!!I would'nt mind seein them go away to give space to a more user freindly system.Leave Litestep fer the geeks,,eh!!??running XP,big-n-fast,,,until Litestep.

You don't 'need' to install LiteSTEP at all....all you need is to install ShellON as a shell manager and copy some files into a LiteSTEP directory, and, if it all goes pear-shaped, well, the Shell manager will let you back to Exploder painlessly.

No need for System Restore....no need to Re-Install Windows....no need to tear hair out.

I can't say it's 'idiot-proof', though....past history proves otherwise...

For God's sake don't reinstall Windows. Try this (this assumes you've installed Windows in the default folder, if not change the path accordingly):

1. Reboot into DOS mode and type "edit c:\windows\system.ini" {without the quotes).
2. Find the line in the [boot] section that says shell=c:\path\to\whatever.exe
3. Replace shell=c:\path\to\whatever.exe with c:\windows\explorer.exe the line should now read shell=c:\windows\explorer.exe.
5. Save the file and close the editor.
4. Reboot.

Everything should now be fine.

OOPs

Item 3. should read:

3. Replace c:\path\to\whatever.exe with c:\windows\explorer.exe the line should now read shell=c:\windows\explorer.exe.

jcg...loved the numbering...

That line only needs to be 'Shell=explorer.exe"...the Windows kernel 'knows' where explorer.exe is...the path is redundant...

Snowman: if you want to run HoverDesk as shell and not as desktop replacement, you´ll have to exactly the same things as with LiteStep. if you want a system tray HVD will even become a little more complicated as you will need a third party app for this. check the HVD helpfile for more info.
