So the computer finally is showing it's age

Monday, January 14, 2013 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

You normally get a fan with the CPU itself. It's a shame I have very little money otherwise I'd be more than happy to help.

Yes, that's normally the case, but I am working on a budget and to send one from Australia would cost a tad over 50 bucks, hence my sending the CPU only.  I'm hoping somebody in the US has one they can spare, it would make the package viable and kona could be up and running in no time.

I am okay on my end for the board and fan.

Okay, that's great, we're almost in business. If somebody had a spare DVD ROM laying round we'd be laughing.

So about this LCD monitor, could you manage it if we could get some donations to cover the postage? I mean, if a few people chipped in a few bucks each it needn't cost anyone an arm or a leg.

@ Jaroepz, some DDR2 would be great and give his memory a boost. Thank you.

This is working out so great. Once Kona gets the stuff he'll have Win 7 to boot. It'll be a couple more weeks though before I have the cash to send it. We're gonna have so much fun. Thanks guys! Oh....will it be able to handle Win 7? If not I'll send the XP disc too.

The power supply I am running now is a 250 Watt PSU. It has 4 molex connectors. I had to use a SATA adapter to run the hard drive. It's about 10 years old.

If I got a psu also, I am pushing a hundred bucks and I am not sure I can, so if anyone has a psu that would free me up to consider a lcd shipment.

I found a psu for 25bucks, sata ready and 450watt or 550 cant recall now. I have weeks where 25 bucks would save my life, but, I will try to swing it. That does however bury me and I believe the monitor would be out without contributions. I will try getting a ballpark figure on shipping still though.

So, hopefully, if no disasters occur, A mb, heatsink and psu should be coming your way. You have a ram upgrade and processor, adn a dvdRW. So, unless you have a trackball mouse, you should be in good shape compared to now.

Well hopefully we can get someone on board to help with shipping. Without a new monitor all of this is almost a wasted effort. The one I have now is very dim and out of focus. I have tried everything to fix it. It's just very old.

Talk to everyone later. Thanks for all everyone has done, I really appreciate it.
