you make a very good point CarGuy......I've always been an advocate of leaving the system up and running as opposed to always shutting down. The reason primarily for leaving a system up and running is because, in all actuality, it is much harder on platter drives to always have to spin up and then shut down and it is twice as hard on an IC chip. Even though they are made of the latest polymers, the biggest enemy is expansion and contraction which will inevitably lead to microscopic cracks that will lead to catastrophic failure eventually. The more you heat-up and then cool down a polymer the more brittle it becomes over time. Your computers internals actually suffer less stress if they are left on and temperatures remain constant and stable over an extended period of time. My rig is an energy hog no doubt, but I think I probably break even by leaving my system running rather than shortening the life of the components and having to replace them sooner than later.     -- Ace --

I agree Ace, not only does it save wear and tear on your drives, as Jafo pointed out a while back it affects other components like his CPU fan.

If he hadn't shut his system down, it would probably still be running today.

I do it with my laptop, put it to sleep at night then wake it up in the morning.

Yeah I've just been putting the system to sleep. Is this a good behavior? I'll take some time readings of boot times and stuff when I am not so busy.

Come to think of it Kona, how long does it take Firefox to start up if you set it to start up to a blank page?

What extensions and add-ons are you running with FF, kona. Have you actually timed it and have you done so with a bare bones install of FF or with the portable version?

Yep , that would definitely be something to investigate. I don't use Firefox myself, but I do use iTunes (only because of my iPhone), and it's true that iTunes on my machine does have an extremely long start-up time after a reboot.    -- Ace --

iTunes is a finicky piece of software and is normally slow to open. If you want to speed up the load time, wait to plug your synced devices in until after it's open. If you open the program with a device plugged in it tries to read the content while loading which extends the load time.

As for FireFox, by default it checks for updates to its self and it's plugins which extends the load time. You can go into the update options and turn those off to speed it up.

Yeah, any program beginning with "i" isn't good for your PC...hehe.
